Breeze in the Forest was commissioned for the concert to celebrate the 60th birthday of Professor Haruyuki Nakatsukasa of Osaka Kyoiku University. "Kanreki" is a special term used to celebrate reaching the age of 60 in Japan. The composer was inspired by some of Professor Nakatsukasa's admirable characteristics upon composing this work: he speaks softly and at the same level as his students; he is fashionable, stylish and refined. The band accompaniment is at a moderate level of difficulty, allowing the solo flautist to choose this work for many an occasion.

Here is a terrific march for young players written in the traditional British style. The opening strains are folk-like in nature with underlying modal harmonies, while the stately trio is reminiscent of the processional style of Elgar and other British composers. The "New Forest" refers to a region in southern England established as a royal hunting preserve by William the Conqueror around the year 1079, which has remained largely unchanged since ancient times. Forest of Tranquility is our newest work in our very beginning band series. Like all of our compositions in this performance level, your students can play this within the first few months of study. Thus, getting in a very early concert and keeps kids in the band program. This is a gentle sounding song starting in a minor mode, moving to its relative major and back to minor, a sound not often heard for a beginning band at this level. Clarinets do not cross the break. The 1st trumpet's highest note is Bb.
