    Evensong - William G. Harbinson

is a beautiful ballad in standard song (ABA) form with a brief coda. The lyric nature of the composition offers opportunities to develop the ensemble's expressive playing with concentration on tone, intonation, balance, and phrasing. The contrasting B section features the woodwind voices and moves through several non-traditional key areas (B, D, C major) before returning to the tonic key (E-flat major) for a varied restatement of the A section. The coda provides a quiet and peaceful conclusion. (3:45)

Romance, Opus 40 - Ludwig van Beethoven / arr. Todd Stalter

Beethoven wrote two "Romances" for violin and orchestra; his second one, the Op. 40 in G Major, was actually published in 1802, two years before the Op. 50 in F Major, even though the F Major "Romance" was composed four years earlier. The double stops of the violin solo are faithfully preserved in this arrangement, and careful attention to articulation and emphasis on melodic playing by every section of the band will make this piece an ideal choice to introduce the music of this master composer to young musicians. The fun technical lines, originally in the piano and violin, are split among the brass quintet. The band parts are very light and straightforward which allows for some rest on a long concert.
