The Legend of Ratu Kidul - Filip Ceunen

The Legend of Ratu Kidul carries us into the world of Indonesian mythology, on the island of Java:Once upon a time, the Queen of the Southern Seas was a kind and beautiful princess. She was the daughter of Prabu Munding Wangi, the favourite ofthe entire court and the local people. Her royal father doted on his daughter. Her name was Dewi Kadita, but many called her Dewi Srengenge or the Angry Princess.Prabu Munding Wangi longed for an heir, but Dewi Kadita's mother couldn't fulfil thiswish. So he took a second wife, called Poetri Moentiara, who was very jealous of the lovely princess and her mother. She begged the king to banish both her rivals from court. However Prabu Munding Wangi didn't do as she asked. He loved his first wifeand her daughter. The second wife bore him a healthy heir, but the monarch remained firm. So Poetri Moentiara called upon the renowned witch, Djahil. She promised her a princely reward, if Dewi Kandita and her mother were banished. Djahil thought fora moment and incanted this rapal (spell): "May leprosy befall you both". Soon both mother and daughter began to suffer this dreadful disease. According to the law of the land, they were to be banished to the wild forest high on the mountain. With aheavy heart, King Munding Wangi saw the law carried out. So the two set off on their way to the forest, covered in terrible sores. A great sadness fell across the land, except for Poetri Moentiara, the second wife of the king, who had achieved heraim. The princess fell on hard times. In the forest lived a hermit, who took pity on the mother and daughter. The queen couldn't bear the shame and within a few days had died. Now Dewi Kandita was all alone in the world. There was still the hermit, however, who fortunately provided food and shelter in a cave temple. He bound her weeping sores but couldn't relieve her emotional pain. Dewi Kandita became increasingly bitter and eventually left the hermit. She travelled southward from village tovillage, further and further, until eventually she reached the shores of the Southern Sea. She climbed upon a high cliff and gazed out onto the sea that spread before her. She was tempted to dive into the deep green and blue. In the cool waters shewould be able to forget all her pain and suffering. Suddenly awaking from these thoughts, she jumped into the deep. The gods, who had looked on Dewi Kandita throughout her hardships, were filled with deep compassion. So they transformed her into apowerful spirit of the netherworld, Ratu Kidul, and to this day she resides in her grand palace under the sea.

Suite (From Der Rosenkavalier) - Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) is mainly known for his symphonic poems such as Don Juan, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben,... However, he also wrote many operas and "Der Rosenkavalier" (created in 1911 in Dresden) with a libretto by Von Hofmannsthal is probably the most popular of them all. In our "Jan Cober Series", we would like to present this very special arrangement of the suite from "Der Rosenkavalier". Jan Cober worked extensively on this arrangement and carefully composed this new suite. In this respect, he preserved the necessary mood and vitality of Strauss's music so it could be played by a brass band. He has done this without losing sight of the musicaltension of the original.

Land of Legends - Andreas Ludwig Schulte

In 'Land of Legends' German composer Andreas Ludwig (what's in a name) Schulte takes you along to the fictional world of legends, myths and fairy tales. The introduction to the first part (The Castle) describes the majestic contours of the scene of action. Its instrumentation (horns) immediately makes you imagine being in Medieval spheres. The addition of trenchant copper instruments even gives the part a heroic tinge. After entering through the gate, a lot of hustle and bustle appears to be going on in the courtyard. Pages, squires and soldiers are busy attending to their arms. Beer is being brewed, flax is being spun, cattle are being tended and some craftsmen fromneighbouring villages are busily at work. In the upper chamber of the round tower lives an old man (The Old Wizard). He hardly ever comes out, and nobody knows exactly what he is doing. It is said that he is engaged in wizardry and magic. It is all very mysterious. There are also festivities, some of them sober, others exuberant. The wedding in the third part is celebrated in a grand manner. With a flourish of trumpets, the bride makes her entrance at the hand of her father. Afterwards, at the party there is dancing to the music played by minstrels and of course a plentiful banquet follows.

Kings Row Fanfare - Erich Wolfgang

Kings Row fanfarecontinued Erich Wolfgang Korngold's late career transition from period piece and adventure films to adult dramas whose darker tones and complex narratives, which lent themselves well to his operatic writing. Korngold was very much attracted to the psychology and complexity of this character driven drama. What resulted was one of the finest scores he ever composed, which was at once sumptuous, melodically rich, and full of heartache and nostalgia. What is remarkable is that he wrote twelve themes, one for each character, as well as numerous secondary motifs. The manner in which he weaves his themes together, varies their expression, and joins them with exquisite contrapuntal writings offers testimony to his compositional gift and mastery of his craft. In many ways Kings Row is, from a compositional standpoint, perhaps the most satisfying, and best score Korngold ever composed.
