Confrontations (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bullock, Jack

Defined, "to oppose a challenge or standing in the way of opposition." In general usage it insinuates that this can likely be resolved and is not as serious as a "fight" or "war." In this music, the composer suggests that a confrontation could be described as a non-harmonic discord which is quickly changed to a pleasing resolution. Energetic percussion contributions enhance this bold contemporary composition.Duration: 5.00

Festa Paesana Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Lunteren, a village on the Veluwe (a wooded region in the Netherlands), sets the scene annually for a village festival dominated by folklore. Festa Paesana (Italian for village festival) is set to music by several folkloric sketches. The theme in Festa Paesana is partly based on a Dutch anthem (Wien Neerlands bloed); when other lyrics are used it is also known as the Lunteren anthem. The work begins with a festive introduction, completed by chimes and drums, in which pieces of the Lunteren anthem are heard. The music then transitions to represent a horse auction. We hear horses run their first rounds in the auction ring while being whipped. The following theme is partly based on the anthem. The tension of the traditional auction is amplified by an ever-increasing cadence, reaching its climax when the word ?Sold!? is shouted. The night ends with a majestic variation on the Lunteren anthem. The next morning, when the tower clock hits seven times, the village is awaked by the reveille of the heralds. In a fugatic version of the anthem, we can hear the village slowly come to life. This evolves with the chiming of all towers in the village; the celebration can begin. Carriages drawn by horses rumble through the village and thus, it is easy to hear when a horse hesitates or runs amuck. A traditional folk dance group then dances a whirling waltz while the audience shares their pleasure. Musicians march along the scene and take over the waltz theme in their march. Until deep in the night, the musicians are still heard playing in the streets. Meanwhile, we hear the anthem theme being played in a choral variation (in minor). The first time it is played quietly, as a preparation for Sunday. Then it is played in a celebrating way, enabling the devout village residents to remember the past pleasant celebration with satisfaction. 0:08:10

    Country Gardens

Grainger's first piano arrangement of this English morris dance tune was completed in 1918 as a birthday gift for his mother. It became extremely popular and was his greatest commercial and financial success. Even this simple tune displays his genius with harmony, counterpoint, and color. This very playable arrangement is an excellent way to introduce your students to the music of Percy Grainger! (2:10) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

    Watch Out! - Brian Beck

Whew . . . that was close! by composer Brian Beck is a musical obstacle course for the entire band. This gauntlet challenges every player in the ensemble to a battle of "who performed it best?" by allowing every instrument an opportunity to play both the melody as well as the accompaniment throughout the piece. What was in the lower voice is now in the upper sections and vice versa. There is no better way to teach and assess style, dynamics, phrasing, articulation, and accidentals than having everyone play identical phrases but in difference places. (2:10) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

    Nol, Nol

Beautiful and lush, this setting of the familiar "The First Nol," is a great way to enforce lyrical style. In the traditional 3/4 time signature, the setting opens with a music box effect in the percussion section with a simple, yet elegant statement of the melody. This stunning arrangement develops and builds to a dramatic musical climax and relaxes back to an emotional finish. This is an uplifting addition to your holiday or Christmas program! (3:45)

Beating Beats - Jan Van der Roost

Beating Beats rhythmically is a rather special piece: more conventional metres are manipulated in such a way that the listener (without score) may be confused and even misled at various points! The 'regular four beat accents in a 4/4 measure for example are often not adhered to, giving the impression of a different metre altogether. However, at the same time it may be that some instruments do follow this "normal" 4/4 metre, thus confusing everyone - performers and listeners alike! On one hand, it is a "simple" piece with very playable and melodic themes, but their mysterious rhythmic makes it not only sound more complicated, but also makes for a greater challenge for both players and the conductor! As is mostly the case with Jan Van der Roost's works, the orchestration is both colourful and contrasting, with every section of the modern wind orchestra used equally. All in all, it's a work full of surprises with some unexpected harmonies and special melodic lines but above all, with metrical and rhythmical sure to catch you unawares!

Nostradamus - Concert Band Set - Otto M. Schwarz

Nostradamus was one of humankind's greatest prophets. Many of his coded prophecies proved true. He lived at the time of the inquisition, and his predictions and medical therapies as a physician made him face consequences from the church. After he had been forced to flee several times and had lost his family to the plague, he devoted himself to clairvoyance. He wrote down many events in history in coded predictions. Although there is probably more than one possible way of interpretation, in our world, Nostradamus is still considered to be a unique personality. Whether he is degraded to a charlatan or turned into a myth, he surely has moved humankind with his prophecies. Otto M. Schwarz, soundtrack composer since 2001, wrote a cinematographic work about this man, who is probably the best-known prophet of the last 1000 years.

A Friend Remembered - James Swearingen

Noted composer James Swearingen offers a personal tribute to a dear friend's passing with this highly emotional work. Beautiful themes coupled with the hymn, All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name, provide the perfect opportunity to reflect on the importance of people who touch our daily lives. You'll appreciate the way this popular composer scores his music, and the inclusion of an optional handbell choir for four people is a creative addition to a piece that is simply stunning in its overall design. Very uplifting and very appropriate for any school or band that recently has lost a "friend."
