Prillar&Halling - for Solo Clarinet and Wind Band - Stig Nordhagen

Prillar has it's origin from Norwegian folklorist music. It's a way of calling and singing the cattle home from the fields. Halling is a wellknown folk dance from the valleys in the eastern part of Norway. In this work, the clarinet use the prillar to get the other musicians to join in. The melodic material in Prillar and Halling hasn't got all the sound of Norwegian folklore exclusively. You can also hear folkloric music from other nations. The idea is to show the similarities between these and also the small differences there are between folkloristic elements from a large area. The piece also contains the folk tune "Adam in paradise", from south of Norway. At the end, thetunes are stacked on top of each other, and the similarities of origin turns out. - Stig Nordhagen -

    Persian Dance N 5 - Amir Molookpour

In these Dances commissioned by Louis Martinus, the Iranian composer uses some of the peculiarities of the Persian traditional and folkloristic music with a mixture of various rhythmic and structural approaches. In fact each dance is written in adifferent traditional Persian scale and there is a very strong tendency towards the creation of the melodies almost in the same way used by the Iranian composers of the traditional music in the past centuries. Furthermore, Molookpour on the one handtries to create these dances with this kind of intention toward the melody structures, and on the other hand, he uses the western musical techniques of composition in a very simple manner to bring these two cultural diversities more close.

Promising Skies - Robert W. Smith

In late August of 2005, the normally festive skies over the city of New Orleans began to change. As Hurricane Katrina approached the city, the skies promised a weather event of unprecedented proportions. Composer Robert W. Smith was commissioned by the United State Marine Forces Reserve Band of New Orleans to create this symphonic tone poem recreating and commemorating the Katrina experience. Finally, the "Dawn of a New Sky" brings hope as the city is reborn to share its musical gifts once again."Promising Skies" is large work for concert band at the medium advanced level. Using the American art form of jazz as its base along with unusual percussive effects, the piece is a unique and welcome contribution to the repertoire.

    Composizione Prima - Flavio Vicentini

Many works are composed with the precise aim of describing landscapes, atmospheres or telling stories. "Composizione Prima", on the other hand, was composed with the sole intention of experimenting with some uses of modern musical language. The piece is formally structured in three movements: allegro, adagio and fanfare, without however complying with any standard pattern. The main theme, "fanfara", can be heard several times throughout the piece. It is the only feature of this work that in any way evokes an onomatopoeic sound, to indicate the gradual approach through three dimensional space of a Napoleonic band (fanfare).

    Impulse Power! - Vince Gassi

Impulse power, as a method of propulsion, is considered to be up to one quarter the speed of light. Though the tempo of this engaging work for young bands is not quite as fast as that, it does generate a great deal of energy and momentum. The driving opening gives way to an expressive lyrical section complemented by interesting harmonies before returning to the opening material and a percussive close. The resulting fusion is an exhilarating experience for young musicians.
