Ritual and Celebration (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Moss, John
This dramatic work from John Moss opens with a haunting chant-like theme stated by the clarinets. This theme is developed using rich sonorities and a variety of textures before giving way to the exciting and rhythmic "Celebration". John skillfully weaves the original theme into this new section as it builds to a climax then winds down to a quietly effective ending. A wonderful blend of sophistication and power for younger players.

Overture on an American Folk Tune (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Akey, Douglas
This incredible overture was written for the All County Honor Band in Mercer County, Pennsylvania and is based on the familiar folk song, "Erie Canal." The slow, powerful introduction is comprised of fragments of the famous melody. The tempo then suddenly increases, yielding a driving, staccato variation featuring trumpets and percussion. After giving way to a mysterious section played by flutes and low brass, the "Allegro" reappears in an exciting contrapuntal form. Douglas Akey's Overture on an American Folk Tune is destined to become a classic! Duration: 4.45

Double Concerto - Vivaldi, Antonio
This famous Allegro movement from a Vivaldi concerto for two trumpets is presented here in an arrangement loaded with flexibility as to choice of soloists and even the accompanying ensemble. NAME PERPETUAL, A (Concert Band) - Pierce, Eseld
Under the leadership of Michael An Gof and Thomas Flamanck, a Cornish host, sometimes estimated to number as many as 15,000, marched to London in protest against excessive taxation. Arriving at Blackheath, they were attacked by the King's army and defeated, and the two rebel leaders were hung, drawn and quartered. On his way to his death, An Gof stated that he would have "a name perpetual and a fame permanent and immortal". A Name Perpetual tells the story of the Rebellion in four connected scenes. The music includes strong elements of the Celtic music tradition, being structured around an old Cornish folk tune. The first scene introduces fragments of the folk theme and reflects the anguish of the Cornish people. The second scene opens with the folk theme on solo piccolo and, as different instruments enter one by one, the march is depicted with its accumulation of forces en route. The march halts suddenly as the Cornishmen discover the unexpected arrival of the English army and the subsequent music portrays the Blackheath Skirmish. In this scene the orchestra is divided into four parts, each working independently to create a sense of chaos, with the stronger elements of the brass and bass instruments representing the English, while the woodwind and saxophones represent the Cornish, struggling to sustain the folk tune throughout the battle. Eventually all the parts come together and the final section is a lament for the lost Cornishmen, fading away to leave only a haunting off-stage trumpet solo.

Promising Skies
In late August of 2005, the normally festive skies over the city of New Orleans began to change. As Hurricane Katrina approached the city, the skies promised a weather event of unprecedented proportions. Composer Robert W. Smith was commissioned by the United State Marine Forces Reserve Band of New Orleans to create this symphonic tone poem recreating and commemorating the Katrina experience. Beginning with "Blue Sky," the jazz of the historic city provides the musical inspiration. Soon, the "Threatening Sky" arrives giving way to the "Raging Sky." Finally, the "Dawn of a New Sky" brings hope as the city is reborn to share its musical gifts once again. "Promising Skies" is large work for concert band at the medium advanced level. Using the American art form of jazz as its base along with unusual percussive effects, the piece is a unique and welcome contribution to the repertoire.

SIROCCO (Concert Band) - Graham, Peter
A Sirocco is a wind that originates in the Sahara and sweeps across the Mediterranean through North Africa to Southern Europe. Taking this route as his inspiration, Peter Graham has fashioned a tour-de-force for band that features three Mediterranean folk songs. Two of the three movements are well known in their respective countries. Firstly, the fast and furious Tarantella is commonly heard as part of traditional Italian wedding celebrations whilst the Romanza can justifiably lay claim as one of Spain's most enduring melodies, synonymous with the Spanish guitar. The final movement has its roots in traditional Greek dance music, being a mixture of slow and fast versions of the hasapiko. The best-known example of the form is the famous Zorba's Dance, and in the same manner the Sirtakis sedate opening bars soon give way to a frenzy of activity as the entire ensemble whip up their own musical storm
