£186.20Wald Sinfonie - Kees Vlak
It was during his stay at Freiburg, Germany, where he was attending a Music Festival, that Kees Vlak found his inspiration for this romantic work. At this festival he was awarded a prize for one of his compostitions, which was played by several bands from different countries. The composer was staying in the small village of Horben, hidden among pine woods on a mountain at the border of the Black Forest. From the balcony of his room he had a splendid view on the Schawinsland Valley, scarcely hidden by the tops of the huge pines. Each morning a blackbird singin in a huge pine next to his window woke him up. This bird song opens the composition.Whenever possible the composer and his wife went for a walk in the Black Rorest. The rediscovery of this wonderful area is expressed by the steadily increasing number of tone colours, used in the orchestration. Each village still boasts its own folk music and dances. More than one hundred bands were playing all around; the Black Forest seemed to be the scene of one huge festival. The image of the Black Forest is also linked to that of hunting scenes, so the next theme is being introduced by hunting horn themes. The second theme paints the lake "Titisee". At first the lake is very calm, but a stiff breeze sets both water and music alike in motion. The small town of Titisee is very popular with tourists and is famous for its woodcutting, its clockworks and musical boxes. It is a popular folk tune, played by a musical box that makes the link with the next theme. The joy and cheerfulness of the dancing village people is expressed by a movement which works out the initial theme.On leaving the little town, one can hear once more the hunting music from the wood as well as the song of the birds. The new theme is againg closely linke d to the hunt and played by the typical German helicon-like euphoniums.this theme interacts with the wecond theme and the word ends with a grnd finale meant as a musical hommage tot this wonderful area.

Originally the second movement of Boyce's Voluntary in D, this piece has become popular in the English Church as a postlude for occasions such as weddings. In this edition it has been extensively re-arranged by Rodney Parker in baroque style for two solo trumpets and band.The solo trumpets are best placed apart, ideally above and to each side of the band but not too far away. The piece should be played in a clear baroque style with special attention to dynamics and articulation. The accompaniments should never overpower the soloists and it should always be performed lightly. This is most important for the Tuba and other bass instruments for which this piece is a fitness test!

£140.80Italienische Lustspiel Ouverture - Ted Huggens
This work was composed in the style of an Italian opera overture. The first part has a quick tempo and flashing dynamics, and contains some virtuoso passages. It has clearly been inspired by Rossini's music. The slow second movement is based on the popular Italian folksong 'Santa Lucia'. It looks like a serenade with trumpet and alto saxophone solos. The themes of the first movement come back in the fast final movement with a virtuoso part for the bass instruments. The composer adds now and then some motorial rhythm.

£186.20Commedia Dell'Arte - Joseph Horovitz
As the title implies, the work was inspired by the comic theatrical tradition developed in Italy from the 16th century onward, by troups of travelling actors. However, it originated long before during the roman period, and it influenced the much later comedies of Gozzi, Goldoni, Moliere, Lope de Vega, as well as the English Pantomime and the Viennese folk-play of the 19th century. Like many of my compositions, this piece has obvious balletic and pantomimic elements and performers and audience alike, should be encouraged to imagine characters such as Harlequin, Columbine, Pantaloon, Truffaldino, Scaramouche, together with pompose guardians, languishing daughters, serenading lovers and cheating servants. Let the curtain rise .......

£214.80Concerto Pour Hautbois - Serge Lancen
The 'Concerto pour Hautbois' was written in 1991. In fact, it is a new version of the 'Concerto for Harmonica and Symphony Orchestra' commissioned by the famous harmonica virtuoso Larry Adler in 1954. The latter also created it in Birmingham (England) the same year. There is no other oboe part in the band, in order to hold the tone color of the solo instrument in the spotlight.

This concertmarch was composed in 1994 and it was dedicated to a medieval town. At the beginning you can hear the dissonant blares (trumpets, cornets, horns and trombones) symbolising the rivalry between the four districts of the town. Then, the piece is a symphonic march in Italian style but not completely traditional. Before the end, it is possible to hear the blares of brass again, but now they are melodious, so the piece turns sweetly to the end.

Originally this music was composed as a song on Ukrainian text and dedicated to Kiev - capital of the Ukraine. Kiev is one of the oldest in the former USSR city, it has its own originality and has a lot of parks and public gardens. Chestnuts trees among others are very beautiful and considered as a typical sign for this city. The content of this 'instrumental song', as it always happens in music with its universal language, is to express warm, 'sweet' and cheerful feelings.

Mandalay, the cultural capital of Burma, was very seriously damaged by bombings of the Allied Forces during the Second World War. 'The Road to Mandalay' has been a kind of oriental symbol, which was also used in literature, e.g. by Rudyard Kipling. Robie Williams made a song with the same name and in July 2000 it reached the top of the international hit parade. Afterwards, he used it as part of the soundtrack of his short movie picture 'Rob by Nature'

£253.70Rainforest Concerto - Saskia Apon
Rainforest Concerto has been commissioned by the Brass Band Rijnmond. This double concerto for two trombones and wind band consists of three parts with the cadenza in the slow niddle movement. Saskia Apon was inspired by the threat of the destruction of the rainforest. In the first part, Creation, we hear an accelerated reproduction of the birth of this impressive natural phenomenon. We hear the first birds, we see the growth of the mangrove trees and we witness the struggle for light and the force necessary to keep the realized equilibrium in a perpetual balance.The second part, Ode, is a tribute to the wonder and splendour of the rainforest. By means of subtle and extremely delicate sonorities we hear how nature adds an inestimable value to the rainforest. However it is also extremely fragile and this engenders a certain melancholy due to the awareness of man's impotence to respect this beautiful nature.In the last part, Contra Demolition, we hear the threatening decline, but also the revolt against this possible ruin. It is a heartfelt cry to leave nuture in peace and to work hard for the preservation of the beauty and the value of the rainforest.

The composition Floris was first of all written for the movie picture 'Floris', based on the old television series of the same name, with, among others, Rutger Hauer in the leading role. This series told the adventures of Knight Floris in a traditional old Dutch scenery.Together with thousands of Dutch children at that time, composer Fred Vogels was glued to the television and played the thrilling adventures all over in the garden. The music consists of several scenes suggesting the sound of hoofs and sword fights, as well as the exciting moments when the hero triumphs. We also hear when he shows compassion with the defeated enemy and, of course, there are the romantic descriptions of the meetings with his sweetheart as well. It is up to the listener to guess how it all ends...
