Rejoice and sing! was written in celebration of the 95th birthday of Sir David Willcocks. John Rutter writes: I was delighted to be asked by OUP to compose a new carol in his honour. Writing 'Rejoice and sing!' I recalled the many happy Christmas concerts he conducted with the Bach Choir in London's Royal Albert Hall, thinking also of his fondness for quirky rhythms, hence the lopsided 7/8 which runs through much of the music. This arrangement is written for combined Concert Band and Chorus, but may be performed by band alone. It is compatible with the original version except that it is transposed down by one-half step (semi-tone).

The work describes the various landscapes that the Sahara has to offer, using different instrumental groups to underline different characteristics. Both an intense rhythmic passage with lots of percussion, as well as a chorale part with beautiful brass segments, make this a wonderful yet challenging piece. Wilfred Heaton's compositions have a worldwide appreciation and although his output was small it is work of the highest integrity and calibre. The history surrounding 'Celestial Prospect' is somewhat sketchy. The composer describes it as a 're-casting' of an earlier work written sometime in the 1940's the score of which is now lost. The theme 'Come comrades dear' has been known from Christian Mission days and reflects the composer's penchant for old Salvation Army tunes which are simple and direct in character. The following 5 variations contain much interest and originality including a beautiful 'elegy to departed comrades.

The Crucifixion, an oratorio composed by John Stainer in 1887 was designed in such a way that most church choirs would find it accessible. Also, it helpfully includes five hymns so that the congregation can contribute also. Whilst the text for this work was written by W J Sparrow Simpson, who worked with Stainer in an earlier work entitled 'Mary Magdalene', that used in this setting of 'God, so loved the world' is literal from John 3 verse 16 in the scriptures. This movement of 'The Crucifixion' is the most popular and widely used.

Possibly the most English of all hymns, Jerusalem, with words by William Blake and Music written by Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, by many is considered to be the unofficial anthem of England. Interestingly, by some within the Church, Jerusalem they say is in fact not a hymn due to it not being a prayer or praising God. As such it has been removed from hymn lists, most notably at Southwark Cathedral.

Venezuelan pianist and composer Moises Moleiro Sanchez was born in Zaraza on March 28, 1904 and died in Caracas on June 18, 1979. His most popular work is Joropo, composed for piano solo. This charming work is a typical dance from Venezuela in 3/8 time. Johan de Meij, who was appointed regular guest conductor with the Simon Bolivar Youth Wind Orchestra in 2010, orchestrated Joropo for wind orchestra. It was written as an encore piece for the SBYWO, and is dedicated to the founder of El Sistema, Maestro Jose Antonio Abreu.
