With "The Big Apple" Manhattan was intended. It was the place to be. Around 1920 Harlem was the center of a thriving black culture. This period is known as the "Harlem Renaissance". In the famous Cotton Club were many concerts of greats like Duke Ellington. Broadway attracts millions of tourists. Both the rhythmic and the melodic structure of the Cake Walk display a clear relationship with ragtime and jazz and even a composer like Claude Debussy has availed himself of these influences in his music (Le petit Ngre and Golliwogg's Cake Walk).

The Blue Ridge Mountains of North America have inspired many composers, the melodic and rhythmic patterns associated with that region provide a wholesome rustic diet, which may balance our urban sophistication. The three movements of this work are composed on simple symphonic structures, but they include a programmatic element linked by the idea of Bacchus, the god of Wine, Women and Song. To me personally (and probably without conscious foundation), Bacchus has always been a rather jazzy city dweller, which occasionally leaves the rat race of Olympus for a weekend in the country. The course of this work may be taken as a light-hearted illustration of such thoughts. Jazz elements mingle with country-dance, Blues merge with prairie-style, and Valse de Paris is subdued by hoedown. The composition went through many forms from 1974 onwards, and was realised in its final stage for symphonic Wind Band at the end of 1983.

The five movements of this concerto, each, by design, in a different musical style, and requiring the soloist to perform on the three main soprano bass instruments: Trumpet, Cornet and Fluegelhorn, were written to demonstrate the modern trumpeter's ability to negotiate and produce a convincing interpretation in five different musical styles. The first movement, 'Sonata' is cast in a typical neo classical mode, calling the soloist to perform on the Trumpet; the second, 'Slow Blues' calls for Fluegelhorn; the third, 'Jazz Waltz', calls for Cornet; the fourth; 'Song', a modern setting of an old Taiwanese folksong, calls for Trumpet again; and the fifth, 'Samba', concludes the work with a brilliant outburst of Latin American rhythms and colors.

The American soul music group Earth, Wind and Fire, set up in 1970 by singer and drummer Maurice Whitney, started a real international career from 1975 onwards. Especially the brass players were focused at the spectacular shows which brought a fusion of jazz and funk music. Manfred Schneider made a thrilling arrangement for symphonic band using the success songs Fantasy, I'll Write A Song For You and Boogie Wonderland.

The life of the Austrian empress Elisabeth (1837-1898) which started as a fairy tale but ended as a tragedy, inspired the librettist Michael Kunze and the composer Silvester Levay to write a musical based on the life of the popular 'Sissi'. The musical was premiered in Vienna on 3 September 1992 and was very successful for many years. The story is told by Luigi Lucheni, Elisabeth's murderer. So death, represented by a mysterious and seductive young man, is omnipresent throughout the musical. Several songs have become hits and, of course, you can hear them in this fine selection by Peter Kleine Schaars who gathered various music and dance styles such as the rock shuffle, the jazz waltz and the classical Viennese waltz.

Chuck Mangione won his second Grammy, in the category Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the title song, Children of Sanchez. The title track is sung by Don Potter.

"Black Orpheus" appeared as principal theme in the Portuguese-language movie "Orfeu Negro" in 1959. The song appears in various versions throughout the movie. It was the first bossa nova composition to achieve great popularity outside Brazil. It became very popular in the US in particular. Today it is regarded as a jazz standard.This arrangement is a nice solo for sopranosax, altosax or flugelhorn in Latin style. After a groovy slow start, the arrangement changes into a more up tempo samba-like style to the end.
