The Gladiator (March) - John Philip Sousa

A lesser-known but unforgettable Sousa march is presented in a terrific arrangement for the modern concert band by the expert Andrew Balent. The opening idea has an intriguing tonal ambiguity (is it major or minor?) and the second strain, introduced by the saxophones, is a real Sousa gem. This is wonderful music by any standard, beautifully scored, and represents the American march style at its most ingratiating.

In this edition, Keith Brion has taken his knowledge of Sousa band instrumentation history and arranged a modern version that accounts for the SousaBand sound with contemporary instrumentation. Featuring a part for baseball bat, this piece offers a fun opportunity for the percussion section or for a guest musician/athlete to join the band.

Wolverine March - John Philip Sousa

In 1881, after being named conductor of the United States Marine Band, Sousa composed six new marches to add to the bands repertoire. One of them, Wolverine March, was "respectfully dedicated to His Excellency Hon. David H. Jerome, Governor of Michigan, and Staff." Lively, bright, and stylish, its tuneful quality makes it a natural march addition to concert band programs. As an additional note, Sousa wrote another march in 1926 which he called The Pride of the Wolverines; and while the titles are similar, they are distinctly separate marches and should not be confused with each other.
