Sketches on a French Carol - Bryan Kidd
Like a fine crystal ornament, the delicate opening expresses the precious meaning of the song. Gradually, the music grows in strength to a full and rich proclamation of joy. Thrilling chimes lift the spirit even higher. In the last bars the music melts away once again, befitting the gentleness of the gift and the moment. This is a delightful contrast piece for the holiday concert that allows the musicians to be truly expressive.Meaningful!

Concertino for Trumpet - Kees Schoonenbeek
The first movement of this work, an Allegretto, begins with a fanfare-like opening. After a number of other melody lines, a reprise of the beginning follows, which ends in a cadenza for the soloist. Movement two, titled Rituel, is characterized by interplay between the soloist and the band within a stately melody. In the final movement, the theme of the first movement's opening returns. As the indication 'alla marcia' of the last movement suggests, this Allegro Giocoso contains march-like music that guarantees a lively conclusion. With Concertino, Kees Schoonenbeek has written an appealing work that is very suitable for a beginner soloist. It is also available for trumpet andpiano.

Nocturne - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Tchaikovsky is best known for his purely instrumental compositions. However, we must not underestimate him as a composer of operas. Many of his operas such as Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin), composed in 1877-1878, was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself, but "lyric scenes". The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However, there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes, for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise. After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant, this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz, which can beconsidered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera, this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.

Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ
Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ (We Praise You Jesus Christ) is an old Christmas hymn dating from the 16th century, which can still be found in many hymnbooks today. John Blanken has created a varied and imaginative arrangement on four verses of the hymn. After the introduction, derived from the opening notes, the hymn is first accompanied by an agile harmonisation. Next, we hear the chorale in a four-part setting with a percussion accompaniment. Then follows a short prologue to the third verse and finally its time for fireworks as the arrangement takes a stylistic leap in time with the festive prelude to the fourth and last verse.

Allein Gott in der Hh' sei Ehr
Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Hh' sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director's discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

Musica Helvetica - Jan de Haan
Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.

Bad - Michael Jackson
Five years after the release of the monster album Thriller, which sold a record-breaking 105 million copies worldwide up to this date, this second single from the album Bad, released in 1987, also peaked at number one on the Billboard chart. This song was performed during Michael's first solo world tour that started from Japan (Korakuen Stadium) in September 1987. The short film directed by Martin Scorsese also generated great publicity. In particular, the animated group dance scene in the subway made a huge impact on the viewers and distinguished Michael's image. As the video depicts, "bad" in this song's lyrics indicate the kicking, cool unruly living on thestreets. As the opening number, Bad strikes out a course of slight-but-right edginess with its dynamically groovy arrangement that underscores the electric funk in the original tune. Don't miss the last punch line: Who's bad?

Aureus - Stijn Roels
This composition was written on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the De Pinte wind band. This is also the derivation of Latin title Aureus (golden - from the word aurum, or gold). This work is comprised of three main sections. Thefirst and last sections are predominantly a musical setting of the concepts of celebration and joy in keeping with the theme of jubilee. The music is therefore above all dynamic, energetic and extrovert. The middle section has a more introspective, melodic character, contemplating the subtle beauty of life. Aureus is a newly composed chorale that establishes the most important attributes in life and also within a club or association: love, friendship, health and happiness.
