Finale from Symphony No. 1 - Johannes Brahms
Brahms was known to be extremely careful when composing his music. When he decided to compose a symphony he wanted to be sure to exceed the standard that had been set by Beethoven. His first symphony, completed in 1876 when he was 43 years old, took several years to complete because of his attention to detail. This arrangement of the theme from the finale highlight the long, flowing nature of Brahms' melodies. A real treat for any band.

Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton
A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.

Yamanobe no Michi - Itaru Sakai
"Yamanobe no Michi" (road at the foot of a mountain) is located east of the Yamato basin. It is the oldest road in Japan and is about 35km (21.5 miles) long. The oldest market and positions used for trading merchandise over the centuries are found along this road. While composing this work the composer visualised the activity along "Yamanobe no Michi" imagining the solemn procession of the aristocracy, as well as the chaos that traffic often presents. He also kept in mind the tumultuous history that this road has seen and still represents today.

Le Lion de Belfort - Jan de Haan
Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort: an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and three-part choir to the concert band instrumentation, who utilise texts written specially for the occasion by Jean Ehret. The work's premire took place at the inauguration of Le Lion de Belfort on 28 November 2010, 130 years after sculptor Frdric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) completed the statue.
