Johan de Meij's first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The movements are: I. GANDALF (The Wizard) II. LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood) III. GOLLUM (Smagol) IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK a. The Mines of Moria b. The Bridge of Khazad-Dm V. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Coronation March is in ABA form with just a tip of the hat to William Walton's famous coronation marches written for British monarchs of the 20th century. Variations on a 'Green' Theme begins with a jig in the percussion and reeds before slowly revealing the identity of the theme being varied - Greensleeves. A contemporary (and, some would say, rival) of Johann Strauss I in 19th-century Vienna, Joseph Lanner was, for a time, more popular and widely performed than his associate. After a much-publicized separation of the two musical giants, Lanner was appointed to the coveted post of Musik-Direktor of the Redoutensale in the Habsburg Imperial Palace. Lanners ballet was written in September of 1841; this superb Bourgeois edition brings the work to the wind ensemble repertoire. It is an outstanding example of the Austrian march genre.

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off_x005F_x001E_stage and a little march for brass and _x005F_x001D_flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.

The Dutch composer Harrie Janssen composed "Adventures of the Beaume" to mark the 50th anniversary of his parents wedding. The composer of the march his memories of the family home, and in particular the occupation of his parents. The Janssen family earned a living as inland carriers. "Beaume 'was the name of the ship of his parents. The first part of the march describes the adventures they experienced before the lock, to reach the port of Antwerp. To get here was by the law of the strongest and brutal. The father of the composer had in this much support from the oldest daughter of the family. The themes in the trio reflect the carefree youth,the pleasant atmosphere and the warmth and dedication in Janssen's home.
