March of the Robot Brigade - Chris M. Bernotas

Here they come marching two by two---it's a robot brigade! This dramatic piece for beginning band uses only the first six notes students learn. It is full of meaningful teachable moments that include call-and-response, minor mode, dynamics, and much more. The low brass and low winds play a prominent role throughout and everyone in the band will stay engaged. Students will surely practice this one! (2:25)

March of the Magical Toys - Robert W. Smith

"'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Santa had dropped through the chimney with care, hoping the children would be up the stairs. He placed all the toys round the tree with delight, and wiggled his nose at the stroke of midnight. The toys came alive and marched round and round, singing and dancing to holiday sounds." So begins Robert W. Smith's program notes. Need more be said? Here is that "Smith creativity" at its finest! March of the Romans - Michael Sweeney

Explorer Level (correlates with Book 1, p. 11) It's hard to believe that this impressive piece for beginners uses nothing faster than quarter notes (a few 8th notes in percussion)! Michael cleverly uses the sound of stomping feet and bold harmonies creating an effect that sounds harder than it really is.

March of the Marionettes - Charles Gounod

Delightful, jaunty melody is famous as the theme from the Alfred Hitchcock TV show. Andy Balent's masterful, easy setting has great audience appeal as it teaches and reinforces six-eight rhythm patterns.

March of the Kangaroos - Ed Huckeby

Huckeby's travels to serve as a band clinician and judge in Australia inspired this infectious novelty piece for your very youngest players. You will not believe the sounds your kids will make at this grade level! It's extremely playable with a more advanced sound, and it really gives the audience that Australian feel. Very Unique.

Guardians of the Banner - Joseph Compello

A very nice original march from popular composer Joseph Compello, Guardians of the Banner contains many aspects of a traditional American march but with the developing student in mind. It has an extended introduction, a first strain, second strain, and a break strain followed by a return of the first strain to end the march. There is not the typical modulation to a trio section, making this march much more playable for this level of band. The march is at a more moderate march tempo and contains some really nice melodies, making it a great way to introduce this important style to younger students.
