Jubilus! Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Jan van der Roost's new work Jubilus will make an ideal opening piece for any event. It is in a classical ABA form, beginning with a rising brass fanfare which is quickly replaced by a contrasting expressive lyrical theme. The two themes alternate for a few seconds until an exciting new atmosphere is created with the lively allegro. This Wind Band orchestration of Wilby's Paganini Variations attempts to capture the range of colour and expression of the original. There are opportunities abound for every member of the wind orchestra to play a convincing role in the drama. The intention of the Brass Band work was to use more of Paganini than his time honoured melody (from his twenty-fourth Caprice with a set of fourteen variations), but would also attempt to recreate in modern terms something of the wild and romantic spirit of the times.

VIEW SCORE PDF Caprice was written for Matthew van Emmerik, to showcase his virtuosity in an engaging piece of concert music. The work is in theme and variation form, with the primary material being the theme from the last of Paganini's Ventiquattro Capricci per violino solo, a collection of 24 caprices for solo violin. This theme has been the inspiration for similar works by many composers since it was first published, including Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Benny Goodman and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In this work, the famous theme is treated to a more contemporary approach. The first variation, Capricious, relies on motor rhythms and jagged dialogues between the soloist and the band. It is couched in an organic scale reminiscent of the Phrygian mode. The second variation, Sad, is in direct contrast, acting as a traditional ballad and allowing the soloist to explore the expressive side of the instrument. The third variation, Energetic, is a micro set of variations in itself, designed to display the soloist's innovative technique and stamina. Each section is more challenging than the last, until the work concludes with a whirlwind dance at breakneck speed. Like all of Batterham's recent work, the musical language of Caprice draws upon classical, jazz, funk and ska elements to create a unique sound where anything can happen, and probably will. This arrangement was made possible through Matt's instigation and generosity. Majesty is a powerful and spectacular overture. Right from the start, the brass open the work brilliantly before making way for a majestic hymn mostly played by the woodwind. The end of the piece repeats the opening fanfare as a monumental finale in the style of an American symphonic march. This work was commissioned by the Bourbourg Wind Orchestra (France), conducted by Claude Deconinck, on the occasion of its 230th anniversary. This piece was premiered by the commissioning orchestra on 19 November 2022, just two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Naturally, this work is dedicated to her.Duration: 6.15
