Always With Grace - Gary P. Gilroy

Always With Grace, commissioned by the Lloyd C. Bird High School band, includes references to Amazing Grace. Not meant to be an arrangement of this wonderful melody, it is instead a tribute to this favorite hymn. From the opening bars of driving eighth-note rhythms through the solemn and lyric middle section, the concept of "time moving forward" is represented by numerous musical devices. As the composition concludes, the full hymn is heard while an off-stage saxophone quartet and metallic percussion sounds "tick away" to an intriguing, unique conclusion.

    Three Movements - André Waignein

These three movements for piano and band depict three stages of a musical journey. We set off on a long journey through the world of musical virtuosity in the style of Liszt : grand, lustrous and lyrical. The second stage is a peaceful stroll, the start of a dream. The colours are like a tender caress and the piano sketches transparent arabesques. This splendid impressionistic journey ends in two bright pink drops which evapore just in time before the third and last movement explodes. The last movement is driven forward by a raging rhythm, as relentless as a war-dance. In a confrontation between the soloist and the orchestra all the inner strength of the composer comes to thesurface so that the musicians in the end are breathless... but all the same, no less satisfied.

    Walzerzauber

The genre operetta (literally meaning 'small opera') originated halfway through the 19th century, as an antidote to the ever-lengthening opra comique, which by that time contained more and more tragic intrigues as well. In this charming work, three waltz melodies from different operettas come together. First, we hear 'Lippen schweigen' from Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow) by Franz Lhar (1870-1948). Then follows 'Ja, das alles auf Ehr' from Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron) by Johann Strauss the younger (1825-1899), after which 'Tanzen mchte ich' from Die Czardasfrstin by Emmerich Klmn (1882-1953) closes the medley in a cheerful way. Franz Watz has skilfullyconnected the waltzes to become a magical whole.

Alpine Flowers' Party! - Itaru Sakai

The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.

    Shichi-Go-San - Itaru Sakai

In Japan, a traditional festival called "Shichi-Go-San" (Seven-Five-Three) is held on November 15th every year to wish for the wholesome growth of girls aged seven, boys aged five and children aged three. The composer imagined how a seven-year-old sister with five and three-year-old brothers would go through various happenings, have fun visiting a shrine and strengthen their bonds. Reflecting the meaning of its title, Shichi-Go-San uses a lot of irregular time signatures to form a witty and resplendent concert piece.
