To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan, Commander and Conductor.The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer's aim to provide a work which, as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century, also contained moments of reflection about the last one.After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme, passing quickly through several keys, appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets, followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and, after ashort bridge passage, an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax.An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and, eventually, to a full recapitulation, revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began.

1861 is a lyric hymn/fantasia for young concert bands, based on the beautiful 19th century Anglican hymn Lead Me, Lord (written in 1861 by Charles Sebastian Wesley). The hymn itself features a gorgeous melodic line over biting harmonies and striking counterpoint, and provides the pillars for this work. First is a soloistic treatment, followed with a dramatic full band tutti, and finally a section of evocative humming. Throughout are unique textures and colorful improvisitory accompaniments.

Hymns by Giovanni de Palestrina pre-date those of Bach by over a century and incorporate the great polyphonic tradition of Renaissance writing. The compositions used in this suite are from a collection published in 1589 titled Hymns of the Entire Year, and incorporate antiphonal choral effects that lend themselves particularly well to instrumental settings. Dating from the 1600s, the folk song O Waly, Waly (commonly known as The Water is Wide) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-notemotif common to this song and also Carolina (South Caroline's official song) is developed. This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic flavored Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestososection for the entire ensemble. Adding to the minuscule number of Klezmer pieces for concert band, Nonantum Bulgar is the 20th piece published in the BandQuest series. The title, Nonantum Bulgar, refers to Nonantum, a district in Newton which is home to the city's oldest synagogue (on the National Register of Historic Places), and bulgar (pronounced 'bull-ghar'), a type of Klezmer dance. When writing the piece, the composer imagined the dedication of the Adams St. Shul, which took place over one hundred years ago and featured a prominent Boston cantor and choir and a klezmer orchestra leading a Grand March down Adams St. This upbeat work is fun to play, features a trumpet solo, and gives every instrument the opportunity to play the melody. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music.
