Christmas Overture - Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Christmas Overture appeared posthumously in 1925. Originally orchestrated by Sydney Baynes, it features God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. It is thought by some to have been put together from incidental music he wrote for a children's play called The Forest of Wild Thyme. This band arrangement, based on Baynes' orchestra score, omits the largely developmental middle section of the original, shortening the performance time by two minutes, while retaining all of the traditional carol material.

Voyage to the Moon - Jacques Offenbach
Jacques Offenbachs operetta Voyage to the Moon tells the enchanting story of a prince that sets out on an adventure to travel to the moon. Premiered in Paris in October of 1875, the production was loosely based on the popular Jules Verne novel From the Earth to the Moon and spared no expense in making it a major theatrical event. This lively and exuberant overture contains various themes from the operetta including a beautifully lyric horn solo before concluding with a brilliant cancan-like presto that Offenbach is famous for. The musical flair and dance-like exuberance brilliantly reflect the grand spectacle of the stage presentation.

Overture for Winds, Op. 24 - Felix Mendelssohn / arr. John Boyd
Written for eleven winds when Mendelssohn was fifteen years old, it has been set for contemporary wind band (the saxophone parts are optional, staying with a desire for historical accuracy to the extent feasible), this is a shining jewel of music. With care towards balance, articulation, and musicality, this is a solid repertoire piece for advanced groups. This edition also preserves the instrumentation of the 1826 autograph should the conductor choose to reduce the number of players to the original eleven winds. A terrific recording is available on Kosei KOCD 31993566.
