The next short section This Was Their Finest Hour is nostalgic and lyrical in nature followed by Bandits at One O'clock, a short battle sequence. Soon the aerial skirmish subsides and is replaced by Victory and Flypast, which builds on the patriotic melody hear earlier, and brings the piece to a triumphant close. The composer was inspired by the European space laboratory Columbus that is part of the International Space Station. In this lab, hundreds of scientific experiments are carried out on a yearly basis. This work was commissioned by the Brass Band Bourgueillois, which was founded ten years ago and has since been a 'laboratory' of musical creativity. In response to the many positive reactions to this attractive work, the composer has now also produced a version for concert band.
