Opening Music - Ben Haemhouts
Opening music is one of the first works for wind orchestra by Ben Haemhouts and was originally written under assignment from the Fanfare St. Pieters Kapelle Belgium. The slow mysterious introduction introduces the main theme that consists of the notes F, C, B-flat, F, a combination that was woven throughout the entire work. Then a stirring allegro part follows, with a melodious passage in the euphoniums. The end is a long-drawn-out resuming of the beginning that builds up to a large climax, still built on the same basic tones. This overture is a solemn openings work for every occasion.

The Spirit of an Eagle - Larry Clark
This is one of Larry Clark's most successful and performed pieces. It is a standard overture with a glorious slower B section, and is already on the required music lists for many states (including Texas and Florida). Now it can be performed by a band with instrumentation problems in this new flexible scoring edition. As few as five players and percussion can perform a full-sounding version of this wonderful work. To prove it, we recorded an excerpted version of the piece where we did just that.

Choreography - Robert Sheldon
was commissioned by the 2008 ATSSB All-State Band by the Association of Texas Small School Bands. Written in overture form, the piece draws its inspiration from dance movements found in contemporary stage, ballet and theatrical productions. The piece opens with fast-paced angular gestures accompanied by rapid rhythmical punctuations before yielding to a contrasting lyrical section with long, flowing lines and many opportunities for expressive playing. The infectious beat patterns and memorable melodic content combine to make this an excellent concert opener. (5:33) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Fusion - Brian Balmages
Just as its title suggests, this three-movement contemporary work draws from various types of pop music and dance forms, and sets them in a symphonic framework. The opening movement, Overture, is a short fanfare based loosely on Irish dance rhythms and melodies. The second movement, Ballad, receives its inspiration from various aspects of pop ballads, though no direct references are made. Dense harmonies and interesting textures play an important role throughout the movement. The final movement, Fusion, is a literal combination of rock, funk, swing, and classical in a contemporary setting. Intense and driving, this is an excellent concert finale! You may even want to consider performing the last movement alone as an encore.
