White Light (Oboe Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Composer Philip Sparke decided to use the idea of white to write a piece that was both bright and light in terms of harmony, colour and orchestration. He achieves this by using simple major and minor chords and emphasising the pure, transparent timbres of the upper woodwinds of the band. He was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument. A perfect way to put your oboist in the spotlight.Duration: 5:45

Sheep May Safely Graze (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bach, Johann Sebastian - Sparke, Philip

There are just over twenty secular cantatas in Bach's prolific output, which include The Coffee Cantata (No 211), The Wedding Cantata (No 202), Phoebus and Pan (No 201) and the Hunt Cantata (No 208) which contains the famous aria Sheep May Safely Graze. Written for four vocal soloists it was originally scored for a relatively large orchestra (including flutes (recorders), oboes and horns) and mixed choir. Although secular in character, the words describe how well a faithful shepherd keeps watch over his flock and hence has obvious allusions to the teachings of the Christian church. Bring a bit of the Baroque era to your concert with this first class arrangement by Philip Sparke.Duration: 5:00

Clarinet Concerto (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus - Sparke, Philip

Mozart originally wrote this concerto for a clarinet with an extended lower range, compared to the conventional instrument. As early as 1802, published versions appeared with registral changes, which made the concerto playable on instruments without the extra keys. When producing an edition for the conventional clarinet there are two choices to be made about the 'extra' notes - is it better to maintain the musical line, and hence transpose whole phrases or passages up an octave, rather than single notes, or is the chalumeau tone more important, in which case it may possibly be better to alter one or two notes to keep the correct octave. In this edition Philip Sparke has usually gone for the former so the 'sequences' make musical sense, but have taken the second option in some places. This fantastic work will prove popular with soloist, band and audience alike.Duration: 28:30

Songs of the East Coast Fishermen (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

100 years ago English composer Vaughan Williams visited Norfolk (an area on the east coast of England) to collect and notate folk songs from people of all trades and callings. Accompanied by a local clergyman, he visited The Tilden Smith, a pub which was a favourite haunt of the 'Northenders', the local fishermen, and in less than a week the composer had notated 61 songs. Vaughan Williams incorporated the best of these songs into his own music, most notably in A Norfolk Rhapsody and the Sea Symphony. Philip Sparke has composed this suite based on five of these folk songs together with King's Lynn, a folk song which Vaughan Williams adapted into a popular hymn tune. Why not bring a piece of traditional English heritage to any concert with this melodious work.Duration: 14:00

The Pioneers (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the 'Corps of Discovery' from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touch of the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.Duration: 5:30
