A Klezmer Karnival (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Klezmer music originated in the 'shtetl' (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as 'klezmorim', had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the 'badkhn' (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the 'Purimshpil' (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrasting traditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.Duration: 4:45

Big Sky Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Composer Philip Sparke is fascinated by the early history of the American west, in particular the incredible expedition undertaken by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who were dispatched by President Thomas Jefferson in the first decade of the nineteenth century to map the headwaters of the Missouri River and establish a route to the Pacific: a two-year journey that led them across the uncharted Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. Big Sky Overture depicts the vastness and beauty of this area and will bring a feel of the Wild West to any concert.Duration: 4:20

Ten Chorale Preludes (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Reger, Max - Sparke, Philip

During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed. They also make great pieces for band warm-ups or studies in intonation, sound and balance.

Time Remembered (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

The initial idea was for a millennium piece, which it is, but rather than add to the many celebratory pieces that have understandably been written to salute the 3rd millennium, Philip Sparke thought it would perhaps be appropriate to think about the aspects of life that are constantly with us (such as faith and philosophy) rather than the exciting changes that the year 2000 has undeniably wrought. This calm meditative work will bring a moment of serenity and reflection to any concert.Duration: 9.00

A Tameside Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

A fanfare opening followed by the sonorous full band leads to a lively tuneful allegro. This is developed, with the occasional change of metre, before the fanfare returns, cleverly counterpointed against the music from the quicker section. This overture is yet another brilliant Philip Sparke work.

Second to None (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to "Nulli Secundus", the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp's own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair!Duration: 6:45

Three English Folk Song Miniatures (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

England enjoys a rich folk song tradition. Composers such as Cecil Sharp and Vaughan Williams rekindled an interest in this heritage at the beginning of the 20th century by arranging numerous songs, some of which were transcribed for the first time. Philip Sparke selected three songs from the 18th and 19 century for his Three Folk Song Miniatures: the sherman's song Dance to Your Daddy, the love song O Waly, Waly and Bobby Shafto, a song from the northwest of England.Duration: 5:30
