Zion Hears the Watchmen Singing (Zion hrt die Wchter singen) is the fourth of seven movements of Bach's cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ('Awake, calls the voice to us'), BWV 140, also known as Sleepers Wake. It is regarded as one of his most mature and popular sacred cantatas. It is written in the style of a chorale prelude, with the phrases of the chorale, sung as a cantus firmus by the tenors (or by the tenor soloist), entering intermittently against a famously lyrical melody played in this arrangement in unison principally by the woodwinds. Bach composed the chorale cantata in Leipzig for the 27th Sunday after Trinity and first performed it on 25 November 1731. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

Six miniatures based on animals from the Japanese 'Junishi'. Zodiac Dances was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band, Osaka, Japan to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Sparke had previously written the piece, Prelude to a Celebration for the band, and in composing a new piece for their 50th anniversary wanted to personalise it to reflect the band's history. He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band's foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese 'Junishi'. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Alexander Borodin (1833-1887) was a well-known Russian composer, particularly for his opera, Prince Igor. Borodin was in the middle of composing the piece when he suddenly died. Rimsky-Korsakov and another Russian composer, Alexander Glazanov, completed the unfinished score and the opera had its debut in November of 1890, three and a half years after his death. Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ (We Praise You Jesus Christ) is an old Christmas hymn dating from the 16th century, which can still be found in many hymnbooks today. John Blanken has created a varied and imaginative arrangement on four verses of the hymn. After the introduction, derived from the opening notes, the hymn is first accompanied by an agile harmonisation. Next, we hear the chorale in a four-part setting with a percussion accompaniment.
