West Highlands Sojourn
Inspired by this popular composer's journey through the western hill country of England and Wales, this delightful piece borrows from folk melodies he heard on a river near the Scottish border. The three contrasting sections of the piece make it equally suitable for concert or contest use and Sheldon's artful scoring makes this one of the nicest pieces we have heard. Splendid Music!

Loch Lomond
Here are two contrasting treatments of this beautiful Scottish tune in a unique arrangement for young band. The tune is first presented using the lush harmonies, full textures and interesting inner lines that have become a Dave Black trademark. The second treatment is an enchanting dance-like march in 6/8 time that starts with a snare drum introduction, followed by open fifths in the low brass. The tune is developed with the addition of a woodwind countermelody before a final statement of the tune brings the piece to a close. Great for working on phrasing, balance and dynamics. And every section gets their share of the melodic action! (2:30) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Cape Breton March - John O'Reilly
Cape Breton is a wildly beautiful island on the northeast coast of North America. The Scottish settlers of Cape Breton brought a rich Celtic musical tradition with them. Fiddlers, drummers, pipers, and singers keep that music alive today throughout the island. "Cape Breton March" pays homage to that rich heritage with its sprightly syncopated rhythms and natural minor tonality. (2:00)
