Letter from Home was commissioned as a patriotic work in 1944 by Paul Whiteman and his Radio Hall of Fame Orchestra. Composed toward the end of the Second World War, this music suggests the emotions of a soldier reading a letter from home. The music has been described as Copland's 'most sentimental' and reflects his own homesickness while visiting Mexico. The Gladiator (March) - John Philip Sousa
A lesser-known but unforgettable Sousa march is presented in a terrific arrangement for the modern concert band by the expert Andrew Balent. The opening idea has an intriguing tonal ambiguity (is it major or minor?) and the second strain, introduced by the saxophones, is a real Sousa gem. This is wonderful music by any standard, beautifully scored, and represents the American march style at its most ingratiating.

Starting from a lovely and haunting melody introduced by the clarinets, Carl Strommen's Invocation and Dance, in two contrasting sections, is an object lesson in how to write memorably for young musicians using simple, straightforward and appealing material. The fast second section begins with some wonderful quiet percussion writing and the phrase and meter shifting versions of the original tune cleverly vary it before leading to the fully-scored return of the melody in its original form. The Journey attempts to musically portray the experience offeraveling on an early ship, crossing the vast and tumultuous ocean to an uncertain destination. Cast in a rollicking 6/8 meter, the first theme in D minor signifies determination and perseverance, while the second theme signifies hope and faith.
