Amber moons are beautiful and rare full moons, created when the sun is high in the sky and directly opposite the moon. Amber Moonbegins with an opening fanfare, then moves into the first theme based on this fanfare. A second statement of the theme is repeated softly, followed by a lyrical secondary theme in the woodwinds. Variations follow this statement, and cyclically, like the comings and goings of the Moon and Sun, the piece concludes with a return to the initial theme.

Starting from a lovely and haunting melody introduced by the clarinets, Carl Strommen's Invocation and Dance, in two contrasting sections, is an object lesson in how to write memorably for young musicians using simple, straightforward and appealing material. The inspiration for this piece comes from one of Henry David Thoreau's most famous quotes - "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined." It was Thoreau's vision that we contemplate a simpler life and be deep thinkers about what we want our lives to be. The piece is divided into three distinct sections based on the same three-note motive. The first section is intense and bold, the second is introspective and lyrical and the third is dance-like, almost reminiscent of a Celtic folk song, in lilting in 6/8. This perfect contest or festival selection will highlight your band's strengths.

The Bennett Band Books, published in four volumes starting in 1923, were used to teach the march form and style to literally millions of young band musicians in the middle of the twentieth century. These delightful marches composed by famous march composer Henry Fillmore (using the pseudonym Harold Bennett) have been given new life by arranger Larry Clark. This second collection includes an additional twelve Bennett marches. Also included is a helpful march warm-up section composed by Larry Clark to help teach march form and style to young students. There is also the added benefit of a full, professional recording of each selection available for download below. This is a valuable collection for any level band to use for marches at contest/festival performance or for sight-reading purposes.

An Irish Legend contains original melodies in an Irish style, written to evoke the sounds of the emerald isle of Ireland. The piece is in traditional ABA form, beginning with a lilting Irish jig, then a more lyrical and slow second theme. After returning to the jig, it ends with a climactic section where both themes are played together. It sounds much more difficult than it plays. The piece is exciting and will be well within the capabilities of students at this grade level.
