The well-known folksong Meadowlands is the basis for this spectacular Russian fantasy. The cantabile opening is particularly nice for the woodwinds, and all the parts are quite playable for bands at the easy level. The bold nature of the melody allows the brass to open up their sound a bit, while the con spirito section offers interesting counterpoint and exciting rhythms. A general sense of the bleakness of a Russian landscape in winter, and the strength and determination of the Russian people, comes through.

Refraction - Jan Hadermann
Refraction is a work that uses the entire band and all the colours it can possibly produce. As the title suggests, it was inspired the fascinating physical phenomenon known as refraction. Just like light is split and disbursed into all its colours, the main theme is split into little motives. As the individual motives are disbursed throughout the band, different sections become more prominent, only to recede into the general texture again. The work concludes with the fusion of all these elements in a monumental climax of movement, sound and colour.

Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from the Friesland area of Holland. He was a farmer who became a resistance fighter against Dutch oppressors in around 1500. Whether Magnus was a hero or barbarian is still debatable, but composer Jan de Haan was fascinated by the exciting story and let it fuel his imagination. The protagonist is introduced with a capricious theme which is followed by "De Arumer Swarte Heap," the troops who took to the battlefields against the Dutch. An eerie calm takes over moments before Pier and his troops let their battle cries sound. The work ends as the disillusioned Pier retreats. A concert work overflowing with excitement!

Take the Blues Train - Robert Longfield
What a great combination - a locomotive chugging out of the station, gradually gaining speed, and the great American 12-bar blues form. This fun piece is loaded with special effects including a second percussion part with anvil, triangle, and suspended cymbal to simulate the sound of the train. The band adds a shhh to help generate more steam and excitement. A great crowd-pleaser!

Whispering Winds - Brian Balmages
This well-developed lyrical selection hardly sounds like a grade 1.5 and is very appropriate for upper-level ensembles as well. Brian uses some innovative effects as he portrays the sound of a gentle breeze that almost seems to be whispering. Limited range and technical demands move all focus to musicality. The associated artists Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II played a prominent role in the history of the American musical. Their collaboration started in 1943 and resulted immediately in the big hit, 'Oklahoma'. A series of extremely successful musicals followed, such as 'South Pacific', 'The King and I' and 'The Sound of Music'. With his usual skill and talent, Peter Kleine Schaars made this fine wind band arrangement of the famous song 'It might as well be spring' from the film 'State Fair' (1962), a musical comedy by Jos Ferrer starring Pat Boone.

The title 'Dis-TENSIONS-diS' is a game (or pun) with the words tension and distension (relaxation). The work stems from a 'Leitmotiv' presented at the beginning of the work by the warm sound of the bassoon. So from this melody draws all small parts for maximum re-use like elements of cohesion in different parts of the work. Hence the inevitable game of 'tension and relaxation' that occurs from such re-use of the same subject, but with a multitude of possible variations. Dis-TENSIONS-diS received a Mencion de Honor at the Italian Concorso Internazionale di Composizione originale per banda 2009.
