This piece originates as a piano piece written by the composer as he was convalescing after an illness and operation.In the music there is an outlet for emotions of uncertainty and doubt, but also of hope for the future. The piece was later arranged for wind and brass band, and premiered at a music summer camp in 2021.This piece has a melancholy character and suits bands looking for a piece to work on sound, phrasing, dynamics and expression.

£98.20Space Lab - Giuseppe Ratti
A long pedal-note of evanescent chords, based on empty parallel fifths, announces the theme;flutes and reed instruments exploit some almost imperceptible micro-fragments, supported by muted trumpets, creating what is an almost surreal and spatial atmosphere. This was Giuseppe Ratti's starting point for his "Space Lab", a laboratory of sounds and, later (when the main theme is taken up once more), of rhythms. Although it may sound complicated, this piece is ultimately based on a single motif: the descending fourth played on the second beat by the woodwinds. In this piece, Giuseppe Ratti, with his usual pallet of clear, transparent colours at hand, appropriate for the general public, together with simple, effective themes, has sought to experiment with new atmospheres and rhythms. First of all we hear the entire theme in the Allegro. Then the rhythm changes in a simple but at the same time complex manner: almost a genetic mutation. The part leading up to the final Lento flows smoothly for the listener but requires great skill and experience on the part of those performing it. In the final lento the main theme reappears in all its simplicity and sincerity, purified of all contrasts. A metaphor for a life that leads us towards unimaginable frontiers but which, in the end, always brings us back to the point from where we started.

£157.50Composizione Prima - Flavio Vicentini
Many works are composed with the precise aim of describing landscapes, atmospheres or telling stories. "Composizione Prima", on the other hand, was composed with the sole intention of experimenting with some uses of modern musical language. The piece is formally structured in three movements: allegro, adagio and fanfare, without however complying with any standard pattern. The main theme, "fanfara", can be heard several times throughout the piece. It is the only feature of this work that in any way evokes an onomatopoeic sound, to indicate the gradual approach through three dimensional space of a Napoleonic band (fanfare).

This piece features two themes: one is slow and contemplative, the other is quicker and more rhythmic. The themes are repeated and rearranged several times in a combination of different harmonies and sound mixtures. Both arising out of one phrase, the two themes have been developed in a number of ways using modality as a language. Tiny fragments of the theme introduce and link the various moments. These fragments, repeated using different rhythms and combinations, lead to a finale where the melodic and harmonic elements come closer, continuously imitating each other and becoming more and more similar, until everything overlaps in different scales.

Originally composed for solo organ, Hailstork's fanfare is a 3-minute explosion of joyous sound inspired by the Baroque-era tradition of Chorale Preludes. As in Bach's organ preludes, the familiar hymn's phrases broadly emerge from ornate counterpoint, here in the form of brass fanfares. The result is exhilarating! Also scored by Hailstork for chamber ensemble and for orchestra, FANFARE ON AMAZING GRACE was transcribed for concert band in January 2021 by MGySgt Don Patterson, staff arranger for "The President's Own" United States Military Band, for that ensemble's worldwide broadcast performance at the 2021 Presidential Inauguration.

James Rae is the man who put fun into woodwind and brass teaching. His many compositions, especially in the jazz and blues idioms, have often featured on examination syllabuses. Recent years have seen his publications of easy flexible ensembles for younger players and now he turns his attention to the wind band. In his series The Concert Band Collection, he has written exciting new pieces for the standard concert band line up. Attention is given to each instrument so that the technical and musical requirements do not exceed UK Grade 2. An optional piano part will provide "stuffing" and moral support for the young players who will quickly enjoy James' catchy and imaginative music. Each volume contains two titles. Buffalo RockThis piece has been specifically composed for bands in their early stages of development. Strong rhythmic playing is required from all sections of the band in order to achieve a solid performance. A Royal PortraitThis piece is very regal in style and portrays all the pomp and circumstance that surrounds a high-profile state occasion. It is to be performed with a full, warm sound and players must resist the temptation to overblow as this could have a detrimental effect on tone quality and intonation. As with Buffalo Rock, the instrumental parts have been written in comfortable keys and ranges with all clarinet parts staying entirely in the low register.
