Based on the Old Testament biblical story of the building of the Tower of Babel, a tower built to reach the heavens, composer Hayato Hirose has created this dramatic programmatic work in seven movements that are played without interruption. With skilful detail each movement portrays an aspect of the story of the tower and its ultimate destruction. A magnificent epic work!Duration: 11:45

There Will Come Soft Rains (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sheldon, Robert

Most middle-school students read the moving story, There Will Come Soft Rains. The voiceclock in the story is represented by the 'ticktock' of the claves, and the music is lyrical and pastoral in nature. This work expresses that we are just a part of the cycle of life and the beauty of all that surrounds us will go on after we are gone. Duration: 3.00

Gulliver's Travels (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

The book Gullivers Travels (1726) by author Jonathan Swift formed the provocation for writing this composition. Even though this composition isnt a literal representation of the original story, a number of elements were still retained. The ships doctor Gulliver finds himself in 4 (fictive) areas, each with their own inhabitants and customs. Each part of this suite also received the name of one of these areas:I. Lilliput The enterprising Lilliputians are represented by a playful, common theme in the first part.II. BrobdingnagIn the land of "Brobdingnag" Gulliver is carried off by gigantic giants, which you hear approaching with the sounds of the bassinstruments. The same theme is constantly repeated and quickened in order to increase the tension.III. LaputaLaputa is an island that floats in the air; its inhabitants are strange people with slanting heads. The dreamy, special atmosphere is especially well conveyed here.IV. The HouyhnhnmsFinally Gulliver finds himself in the land of the Houyhnhnms, where intelligent and noble horses rule over the primitive, undeveloped people (yahoos). The trumpets in the brilliant opening express the galloping horses; the gallant theme that follows (horns and trombones) symbolises the primitive yahoos. The whole composition ends with a big finale.I intentionally tried to limit the degree of difficulty of Gullivers Travels. Despite this I think that this work can appeal to many orchestras due to the colourful orchestration (cues are provided where needed), the simple and clear theme and the highly imaginative breeding ground of a beautiful story around which this composition is built." Matreshka (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

For more than a hundred years, the matreshka dolls have been a traditional trademark of Russia. The story behind these dolls is that many years ago, a little Russian girl, Olga, got lost in a forest. When her older sister finally found her, she said, ?Let me hold you.? Next, their mother also arrived, and said, ?Let me hold you both.? Subsequently, the grandmother joined them, and said, ?Let me hold you all.? As a result of this story, these popular ?nesting dolls? came into being. The work Matreshka consists of originally-composed themes. The first theme, reminiscent of a Russian hymn, is followed by another theme in a typically Russian style. A slow passage forms the transition to the final, energetic movement ? this Russian troika in two-four time starts slowly and ends very exuberantly. A great piece of Russian exuberance that will delight any audience. 04:17

Night on Bald Mountain Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

The symphonic poem Night on a Bald Mountain took its inspiration from a story by the well known Russian writer Nicola Gogol. Mussorgsky took no steps to promote his masterpiece and it was only after his death when Rimsky-Korsakov was looking through the enormous stack of manuscripts that the work resurfaced. Written above the score, Mussorgsky gives a brief description of the story of Night on a Bald Mountain: Gathering Witches, their gossip and chit-chat; The Procession of Satan; Pagan Worship of Satan and Witches Sabbath. This transcription for concert band by Tohru Takahasi remains true to the orchestral original. 0:10:56

    Guardian Angels - Kevin Houben

Guardian Angels gives a musical expression to the legend of Reverend Louis Henri Bhler referring to the use of Psalm 34.North-west Veluwe and in particular Oldebroek (The Netherlands) has a very rich religious tradition which is demonstrated by its monumental churches. They tell the story of a stirring history in which Reverend Bhler played a crucial role. Inspired by his arrival as a pastor in 1870 in the neighbouring Oosterwolde, two big religious communities came into existence with their characteristic churches but this rivalry also resulted in great social unrest. This composition reflects on this striking personality and in particular on the story of the Angel Guard.'One evening Reverend Bhler has given a sermon in Oldebroek and he walks over the Church path through the pastures to Oosterwolde. On this dark and stormy evening Bhler's opponents are waiting for the pastor in ambush. They want to drown him in a watercourse near the Church path but abandon their plan because Bhler is accompanied by two men. The next day it comes to an encounter between Bhler and his opponents. They repent their, fortunately unexecuted , plan. Bhler firmly believes that on the previous night he walked alone over the Church path, and was not accompanied by two men. It was concluded that it must have been the angels who had protected Bhler.'Psalm 34 is central to this composition and this because of its powerful melody but also because the lyrics of verse 4 of the rhymed version fit in well with the special legend of Reverend Bhler:The Lord's angel gathered round himAn invincible heavenly guard,Who tries God's will, around himSo he's well guard(ed)A second melodious and harmonic cell is a musical transformation of the name 'Bhler'. This cell is varied in major and minor third chords and sometimes used as the main idea or apotheosis, but also serves as an accompanying cell or as a bridge between other melodic and rhythmic constructions. The composition was made possible by contributions of: Mr Evert van de Poll, owner of the Van Gelder Groep, Het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Gelderland en Het Feteris Oosterbaan Fonds.
