The Pre-Goodman Rag - Malcolm Arnold
Malcolm Arnold's Clarinet Concerto No. 2, Op. 115, was dedicated to Benny Goodman, and first performed by him as part of the Red Rocks Music Festival with the Denver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Priestman on 17 August 1974. The third movement, known affectionately as 'The Pre-Goodman Rag', is an outrageous ragtime parody with a hauntingly wistful middle section. The work has now been made more widely available in this transcription for wind band.

Thirty To Tango - David Matthews
This tango was originally composed in 1990 as the fourth movement of the composer's Fourth Symphony. It was intended there as a modern equivalent of the classical minuet. The tango is the most alluring of contemporary dances, and a number of arrangements of it exist, including ones for solo piano and for various chamber ensembles. This latest version for thirty (or more) players was arranged in 1999 by the composer especially for the Faber Wind Band Series.

This three-movement symphony musically depicts the history of Hungary. Key historical figures, wars and other important events from this country inspired all three movements. The first movement depicts Atilla, the King of the Huns, and is characterised by fear, threat and aggression. The second movement focuses on Arpad, the founder of the Hungarian State and the final movement is named after Istvan, the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary. The beautiful theme of the national hymn appears throughout the symphony, however it is often partially hidden. It is used as a "thread," hardly recognizable at the beginning, becoming more and more obvious near the end and it concludes the symphony as the "final apotheosis," making the band sound like a majestic living organ.Duration: 12:45

William Walton's last 'original' work of note was the Prologo e Fantasia in 1981-2, commissioned by Mstislav Rostropovitch and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C. It was first performed in London by Rostropovitch and the National Symphony Orchestra. The work consists of three sections. The first movement forms the Prologo, which is slightly reminiscent of the French Overture. The Fantasia opens briskly with characteristic Waltonian energy, and leads, after a climax, into the thematically connected final section Fuga finta (or 'make-believe fugue'). Note to conductors: orchestra performances of this work vary significantly, from a total length of just under five minutes in one performance to over six minutes and forty seconds in another. The audio presented with this arrangement is somewhat in the middle of the timings. So the metronomic markings may not necessarily be taken literally.

Since I had recently made some Bach-like chorale preludes, I chose to make a version of Monk's tune, first in a chamber-musical, contrapuntal manner, then in the grand orchestral style I had always heard lurking there." The Unknown Journey was commissioned by Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band which was established in 1954 and has grown to become one of the top college bands in Japan. The composer chose the title as the piece seemed to create its own momentum as it developed, starting slowly and continuously increasing the tempo. Towards the end it gradually transmogrifies into the closing bars of Ravel's La Valse, a piece which perfectly characterises the idea of unstoppable momentum.
