Mussorgsky!
Modest Mussorgsky (1839--1881) was a relatively unknown composer during his lifetime, but some of his works are among today's best-known pieces in concert halls and films. His orchestral work was immortalized by Walt Disney in and is one of the most performed pieces by symphony orchestras. Selections from these two pieces are wonderfully transcribed for young band in The arrangement begins with the mystical opening from which transitions to the hauntingly beautiful conclusion of that same work. To conclude is the "Great Gate of Kiev" from which is one of music literature's most inspiring moments. (3:30)

Latin American Symphonette (Symphonette No. 4) - Morton Gould
Morton Gould, equally comfortable in the worlds of both "serious" and "light" music, presented his symphonettes (an Americanization of the term "sinfonietta," much like kitchenette and dinette) as works of a truly American vernacular, drawing on popular culture as well as classical forms. His Fourth Symphonette is a departure from the musical language of the previous symphonettes, as it is bursting with latino rhythms, each distinct style in its own movement: I. Rhumba, II. Tango, III. Guaracha, and IV. Conga. Completed in 1940, the work was premiered by the NYA Symphony in New York, under the direction of Fritz Mahler. The saxophones, guitar and piano, although desirable, are optional and fully cued in the other parts. Generally, all parts are well cross-cued so that the work can be performed with a smaller orchestra. Instrumentation in set: 3(1&3 d.Picc).2.3(+BCl).2: 2ASax(dCl).TSax(dCl).BSax(dCl): 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc.(3): Hp.Gtr.Pno: Str(9.8.7.6.5).

Confession (Movement 2 of ) - J. Eric Schmidt
This remarkable composition is the second movement to Eric Schmidt's colorful and dramatic symphony for band. A dark and energetic work, Confession is based on a three-note motive, beginning with a menacing opening, but finally yielding to a beautiful chorale that provides a transition to a somber and reverent conclusion. Brilliant orchestration and well-crafted use of creative thematic material make this a most expressive work. Thanksgiving, the popular third movement of the is also available and makes an excellent choice when performed following Confession. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Three Spanish Songs (for Soprano and Wind Ensemble) - Matthew Tommasini
This cycle is a setting of three contrasting poems by Latin-American poets Leopoldo Lugones, Ruben Dario and Jose Marti. "Olas Grises" uses evocative rain and sea imagery to meditate on the nature of life and death. Set as a lyrical, quasi-strophic song, these images are portrayed through the opening percussion raindrop motive and the moaning vocal line used throughout the movement. "Nocturno" is a frantic soliloquy set as an extended opera scene. The piano and percussion accompany the soprano in the opening recitative which is followed by a surreal aria accompanied by the rest of the ensemble. This is followed by a re-statement of both sections. "Suen~o Despierto" is a short poem about the contrasting images of a waking dream. Based on a fragment of the lullaby "Nanita Nana," heard in its entirety at the opening, the song is a set of three variations, followed by a coda, which portray these various images. Three Spanish Songs was commissioned by Michael Haithcock and the University of Michigan Symphony Band. The recital/rehearsal version of this piece is item number 29638PV ($35).

Aria Della Battaglia
The current edition of Gabrieli's was transcribed for the modern orchestra wind section from the Canto Dialoghi Musicali de Diversi Eccelentissimi Autori: Venice 1590. The work is subtitled "per sonare d'instrumenti da fiato" ("to be played by wind instruments") and is one in a long line of such descriptive works dating from the sixteenth century with no instrumental designation whatsoever. The popularity of this genre, however, did not fade with the close of the Renaissance. Rather, a rich development continued into the nineteenth century with Beethoven's Wellington's Victory, the so-called "Battle Symphony," being a latter-day example.

Pele - Brian Balmages
This latest installment with Canzonique Music is a wonderfully inspiring work. It was commissioned by Jerry Peel, professor of horn at the University of Miami, and was recorded by Peel and the University of Miami Wind Ensemble; Gary Green, Director. Pele was programmed for the College Band Directors National Conference in Baltimore (2004) with guest artist Philip Munds, Principal Horn of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Towson University Symphonic Band, with the composer conducting. Pele was inspired by the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire (or Volcano Goddess) by the same name. She was passionate, volatile, and capricious. This lyrical work is an emotional rollercoaster in which we experience a glimpse of her personality - from her quiet moments to her most volatile.

Sir Roger de Coverley - Frank Bridge
Frank Bridge (1879--1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922, he adapted his popular string quartet "Sir Roger de Coverley" for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge's lively treatment of one of England's most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley's traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig's party in Dickens' .
