    Confession (Movement 2 of ) - J. Eric Schmidt

This remarkable composition is the second movement to Eric Schmidt's colorful and dramatic symphony for band. A dark and energetic work, Confession is based on a three-note motive, beginning with a menacing opening, but finally yielding to a beautiful chorale that provides a transition to a somber and reverent conclusion. Brilliant orchestration and well-crafted use of creative thematic material make this a most expressive work. Pele - Brian Balmages

This latest installment with Canzonique Music is a wonderfully inspiring work. It was commissioned by Jerry Peel, professor of horn at the University of Miami, and was recorded by Peel and the University of Miami Wind Ensemble; Gary Green, Director. Pele was programmed for the College Band Directors National Conference in Baltimore (2004) with guest artist Philip Munds, Principal Horn of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Towson University Symphonic Band, with the composer conducting. Pele was inspired by the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire (or Volcano Goddess) by the same name. She was passionate, volatile, and capricious. This lyrical work is an emotional rollercoaster in which we experience a glimpse of her personality - from her quiet moments to her most volatile.

Sir Roger de Coverley - Frank Bridge

Frank Bridge (1879--1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922, he adapted his popular string quartet "Sir Roger de Coverley" for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge's lively treatment of one of England's most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley's traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig's party in Dickens' .

    Sonics - Donald Coakley

This spectacular piece, commissioned by the Markham District High School Wind Symphony, Bill Thomas conductor, is a large-scale dramatic work for concert band. Chromatic harmonies and dissonant intervals create tension and excitement. Mr. Coakley's brilliant writing for the many band pieces he has done has reached a pinnacle with this new composition. Sonics is around 12 minutes in length and touches on a variety of compositional techniques. Within the sonata-allegro form themes are introduced and developed throughout the ensemble. Contrapuntal elements as well as many meter changes (7/8, 5/8) keeps the pace of the piece quick and energetic. This is a monumental addition to concert band literature and will quickly find it's place with other Grade 6 level band pieces. The composer describes this work as "acidy" and that term seems to best capture the mood of the piece. Sonics is a very difficult work that would prove to be a challenge for a university/college level ensemble. Professional bands may also consider this piece because of the virtuosity that is required from all players.

Guaracha: Third Movement from Latin American Symphonette (Symphonette No. 4) - Morton Gould, ed./arr. by David Bennett

The "Guaracha" is the Third Movement from Mr. Gould's fourth Symphonette, LATIN AMERICAN SYMPHONETTE, which is in four movements - Rhumba, Tango, Guaracha, and Conga. The "Guaracha," relatively speaking, is the "minuet" movement. The name has two implications - one, that of a "drinking song" to which the word Guaracha is extensively employed in South American music, and second, that of a definite dance pattern. This movement has utilized both ideas, being a development rather than a literal interpretation of the original form. The Symphonette was completed in the winter of 1940 and received its first performance with the NYA Symphony under the direction of Fritz Mahler on February 22, 1941. This version for band is arranged from the original score by David Bennett.
