The title comes from a poem by David Wright, and the work is associated with various places (mostly mountains) in the Lake District. The emphasis is on the Patterdale area, though other parts of the Lake District are also referred to, and the work falls into a series of sections which group themselves into larger units, so that is becomes almost a four-movement work played continuously. Shawn Okpebholo's Heritage, in the Edition Peters Concert Band Series, evokes moods, events and sounds (including West African drumming and indigenous melodies) from an ethnomusicological research visit the composer undertook to Nigeria. One of the primary musical themes of the work is an adaptation of a song that comes from the Esan people, a small ethnic group in the southern part of Nigeria and the tribe to which the composer has deep historical and family ties.The Esan language is poetic in nature and, at various moments in the work, the musicians chant the text from an Esan song: Ekine leleyea do obhimen la doeki nalo (My investment in you is paid off. Because of your hard work, your future is bright).Heritage is a revised version of a work previously entitled This is Africa, which was commissioned by Professor Marcellus Brown and the Boise State University Symphonic Winds for the 2011 National CBDNA Convention and is dedicated to the memory of Dr Harry Begian.

This new original paso doble was commissioned by the Richmond Hill Middle School Band, Richmond Hill, Georgia. It provides an opportunity for young bands to perform this popular traditional classic Spanish march style. (Paso Doble literally means two-step.) This is the music of the bull fight, and of the civic celebrations in the Spanish community, and is one of the classic types of marches that bands and their audiences have enjoyed for many generations. While this work is in the style of the great professional bands of Spain, it is readily playable by young bands.

The Corridors of Castle Doria is a musical journey through a castle of varied and mysterious corridors. The opening represents standing upon the steps of the castle and being in awe of its size and majesty. The first corridor becomes narrow and somewhat close, moving ever smaller into a virtual crawlspace. The next section represents a dungeon-like corridor, dark, dank and musty, followed by a secret passage. Finally, there appears a long dark corridor that ultimately ends in the Great Hall and then a race to get out of the narrow corridor and outside to safety.

Incantation and Shadow Dance is a musical representation of the appearance of the witches in the Shakespeare play "Macbeth." The piece opens with two exceptionally long and emotionally charged measures, the mood slowly building, much like "chanting over a cauldron," dark, mystical and enchanting, invoking the spirits of the night. Then everything changes very abruptly, as a rhythmic introduction announces the appearance of the spirit dance. It represents a "dance macabre" and as such, brings a sense of impending evil and darkness to the mood until the full complement of spirits are now dancing around the fire. The gathering of "storm clouds" heralds the appearance of all manner of dark and sinister creatures joining the dance which builds to climax as all the spirits gather for the final frenzied finale.

Like Whirlwinds (Sweeping Through the Southlands) is a programmatic work that captures the essence of the tragedy of June 5, 2010 when a terrible tornado swept through Millbury, Ohio. The music reflects the events and reactions as the storm forces grew with devastating effect before fading away, leaving lives changed forever. Despite all the destruction, the work ends by expressing the uplifting message of community and hope displayed through recovery and rebuilding.
