At this soire music lovers have assembled to celebrate the harvest, play a few tunes, and enjoy a little dancing. Beginning with a lightly scored "hoedown" motif with woodwinds, the good-natured mood is interrupted by a thoughtful chorale, first stated by the brass. Contrasting consonance and dissonance are shared by each section until completed by the full ensemble. Eventually the "hoedown" theme returns with renewed energy, and the piece dances to a surprising finish.

A Moorside Suite was written in 1928 as a test piece for the National Brass Band Festival championship competition held that year. Though slightly abridged, the main themes and styles are present in a carefully-crafted performance piece accessible to concert bands at this level. The major rivers which flow through the United States of America have centuries-long been prime vehicles for exploration, trade, inspiration, life, and general enjoyment for millions of people. Folk songs from the mid-nineteenth century chronicle their stories of love and courage, with three of the most beloved of these tunes incorporated into the fabric of this arrangement by Douglas E. Wagner. Opening with a gently flowing treatment of "Shenandoah," also known as "Across the Wide Missouri," the work transitions to a spirited rendition of "The Glendy Burk." A more sedate feeling for "Red River Valley" follows, with "Shenandoah" returning again in the upper winds in direct and effective counterpoint. A rousing coda, based on previously heard musical material, brings to a close this celebration of our most treasured American resources. Duration: 3.00
