Oh, My Heart Belongs to Ireland (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Swearingen, James

It's virtually impossible to visit Ireland without feeling an instant appreciation for the scenic countryside, the endearing charm of its many citizens, and for the deep-rooted history of the country's many crowning achievements. Solo trumpet/cornet (cued for euphonium) packaged with a brief, but optional, vocal solo highlights the beginning and ending of this beautiful piece. The middle section is pure Irish charm with a light and lively theme performed over the drones of bagpipes along with the rudimental sounds of drummers drumming. Simply stunning! Duration: 3.30

I Shall Love But Thee (Vocal Solo (Soprano) with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer's youngest son's wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)--although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and concert band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire! Duration: 10.30

Battle of Hearts (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

The source of inspiration for this work was the play Das Kathchen von Heilbronn (Katie of Heilbronn), which was written by Heinrich von Kleist in 1810. The music evokes the underlying drama, tensions and emotions of the characters involved: "The Blacksmith's Daughter", "Kunigunde", "The Fire" and "The Emperor's Daughter". The title 'Battle of Hearts' refers to the two women from the story (Kathchen and Kunigunde), who both fight to win the heart of Count Von Strahl. This is an impressive, non programmatic but strong thematic work suitable for concerts or contests. This work was commissioned by Blaserjugend Kreisverband Heilbronn.Duration: 16.30

Sunscapes (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wilson, Chandler L.

This exciting work depicts the lively and sunny nature of the state of Florida. Opening with a brilliant and majestic section highlighting the state's bright and vibrant culture, a flowing melody follows, representing the calming winds and consistent breeze of the state. Dance is a large part of Florida's culture, especially in its southern region, and the 7/8 rhythm captures an Afro-Latin style dance movement. The chorale/hymn section is based on the "Florida Song," which is a traditional school song of many schools, including Florida A&M in Tallahassee. The work then recapitulates and moves toward a driving and joyful conclusion. An excellent contest/festival work! Duration: 4.45

Zodiac Dances (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Six miniatures based on animals from the Japanese 'Junishi'. Zodiac Dances was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band, Osaka, Japan to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Sparke had previously written the piece, Prelude to a Celebration for the band, and in composing a new piece for their 50th anniversary wanted to personalise it to reflect the band's history. He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band's foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese 'Junishi'. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Spring (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan

This overture recounts the magical re-awakening of Spring's arrival in Sweden with the help of two Swedish folk songs. A melancholic, haunting song is first heard from afar as various instruments from different locations in the concert hall echo the solitary female voice. A soulful melody gradually transforms to a polka-like variant that gradually builds into the joyful main theme. The score contains valuable notes from the composer on how various effects and placement of musicians throughout the space can enhance Spring's performance. Duration: 10.45

Requiem Aeternam (from Edgar) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Puccini, Giacomo - De Meij, Johan

Giacomo Puccini was commissioned to write a second opera after the resounding success of his first, Le Villi. However, the original four-act, grand opera Edgar, to a libretto by Ferdinando Fontana, received a rather lukewarm reception at its premiere in La Scala in Milan in 1889. Initially, the work was only performed three times. Of all the planned performances in the subsequent two years, only one took place, in Lucca, Puccini's birthplace. There, the work was well received. Nevertheless, the composer decided to make drastic changes to Edgar the most radical being the reduction of the opera to three acts, as well as altering a few arias, characters and instrumental parts. In its revised form, the work was even less popular than before. The discarded fourth act later provided material for Tosca (the duet Amoro sol' per te), but Puccini never felt the need to defend Edgar as he did other less fortunate operas, such as La Rondine and Suor Angelica. On a piano excerpt for his female friend Sybil Seligman he even corrupted the title to 'E Dio ti Guarda da quest' opera' (may God preserve you from this opera). This did not prevent Arturo Toscanini performing the Requiem from the third act at Puccini's funeral in Milan Cathedral on 3 December 1924. The Requiem in the third act is being played when the long funeral procession carries the alleged body of Edgar, the confused young man hesitating between the love of the virtuous Fidelia and the exotic Tigrana. The mass hails Edgar as a hero, but a monk claims that he has betrayed his country for a few gold pieces. When the soldiers try to desecrate the body, they discover that the armor contains none. The monk reveals himself as Edgar. He wants to leave with his faithful Fidelia, but the vengeful Tigrana stabs him and kills Fidelia. Edgar grieves over the lifeless body of his beloved, while Tigrana is arrested and the people submerge into prayer. Duration: 3.30

Edgar (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Puccini, Giacomo - De Meij, Johan

Edgar was Giacomo Puccini's second opera but despite numerous changes and adaptations, it was never able to match the success enjoyed by his first opera Le Villi. Puccini himself was never completely satisfied with the opera either. It was not until the 1970's, after the first release of a recording of the work, that Edgar gained in popularity and recognition. Johan de Meij has created this fabulous concert band arrangement of this much under-performed work. Duration: 13.30
