When Spirits Soar - Brian Balmages
Let the emotion pour off your stage with this powerful new composition by Brian Balmages. Combining the undeniable spirit of youth along with the emotional passing of a spirit, this work will carry your audience through an arrayof emotions. Opening with exciting woodwind flourishes and contrasting fanfares, the piece eventually moves into a sensitive passage featuring beautiful chamber writing. Special effects are employed (including tuned wine glassesand singing) in an ethereal presentation of the melody using piano, bells, and vibraphone. As the piece builds one final time, the beautiful sweeping lines of the lyrical section return under soaring woodwind ostinatos. Thisworktruly soars! (6:12)

As the title implies, there is a dichotomy of spirit within the contrasting sections. But, there is also a mutual thematic development which makes this composition unique. After beginning with a lyrical introduction in which the trumpet invokes an expressive solo passage, the work then progresses with an energetic rhythmic pattern which offers and leads to a joyful spirit of celebration. A recapitulation of the original theme forms a variation to the end. This distinctive composition was selected by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation to receive the NJSCA Fellowship award. Very nice!

From the opening fanfare, this piece will put you in the holiday spirit! Joyful World is an adaptation of the familiar Christmas carol Joy to the World. The piece opens with fragments of the familiar carol cleverly woven into a spirited fanfare. This is followed by a rendition featuring a regimental snare part with playful harmonies. In the third section, the meter changes to create a beautiful 6/4 ballad, leading to a hint of the familiar Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee tune before returning to the original melody. The piece ends with a spirited brass flourish.

Symphony No.3. All men are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and are to meet one another in a spirit of brotherhood. This article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights forms the basic idea behind this majestic Symphony of Freedom. In each of the three movements, the composer picks another angle on this universal theme of freedom. In the first movement, Cry for Freedom, it's the Dalai Lama of which the composer is a great admirer. The second movement, Dream of Freedom, takes the photograph of the deceased three-year-old refugee boy Ailan Kurdi on the beach at Bodrum as a basis. The finale, Freedom Above All, refers, besides a Bruckner quote, to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven.
