Honor Bound is to be obligated by one's own code of conduct to do what is ethically right. This is often referenced in the military, but applies equally to our everyday conduct. This traditional military style march represents the dignity and worth of the individual. This is accomplished by featuring all sections at some point: a percussion introduction and interlude, trumpet fanfare, low brass melody, and woodwind lead. The notated dynamics are essential for musical contrast and the tempo can be adjusted according to student skill levels. Perfect to teach march form, this composition is also suitable for patriotic celebrations or as a last-minute selection for more advanced bands.

This is one of Harold Bennett's (pseudonym of Henry Fillmore) lesser-known marches, but that is no indication of its quality. It is a 6/8 march in standard march form but what is unique about this classic from the original Bennett Band Book is that it is one of the few Bennett marches that includes a "break strain." This makes it a great introduction for younger students to prepare them to play the more challenging marches of Fillmore, Sousa, and others.

East Coast Pictures - Nigel Hess
East Coast Pictures was commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people. Movement 1: Shelter Island is a small island situated near the end of Long Island, a few hours drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap; but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. This 'picture' is a fond memory of a winter weekend on Shelter Island. Movement 2: In upstate New York lie the Catskills Mountains--an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen, they call you back again and again. Movement 3: New York - or to be more precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, here is a 'picture' that needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked this is a foretaste of things to come!

One of the members of The Salvation Army's 1960s phenomenon "The Joystrings," Joy Webb has a string of popular songs to her name, several of which contributed to the charts successes of enjoyed by the group. In more recent years, many of her tunes have found their why into instrumental repertoire.A prime example of Joy's remarkable gifting is her beautiful Share My Yoke. Although the deeply spiritual words of Share My Yoke may be unfamiliar to some, the sheer beauty of the melody is without doubt. The range is very approachable for this grade level, with the trumpet's highest note being C and the clarinets not crossing the break. This two-movement work is sure to be a hit at your next concert! The first movement, Tropanka (pronounced "tro-PAHN-kuh"), translates as "stomping dance" and originated in Bulgaria. One can hear two repeated notes at the end of each phrase - this is where the dancers stomp! The second movement, Patsh Tantz (pronounced "PAHTSH tahnts") is a classic example of Klezmer, or Eastern European Jewish folk music. The title of this movement is Yiddish for "clapping dance", and all the players get the chance to clap at certain points in their individual parts. Both movements should be played rhythmically; adding weight to many of the downbeats will help bring out the "earthy" character of the music.

The Bennett Band Books, published in four volumes starting in 1923, were used to teach literally millions of young band musicians in the middle of the twentieth century the march form and style. The pieces utilized in this book are: Activity, Summit, Success, Project, Courage, Mister Joe, Genius, Improvement, At Sight, Little Rastus, Laurel and Aline. These delightful marches, composed by famous march composer Henry Fillmore using the pseudonym Harold Bennett, have been given new life by arranger Larry Clark. The original essence of these marches is retained and only the instrumentation and some range issues have been altered to fit the needs of today's developing bands. This collection includes twelve of the Bennett marches along with a helpful march warm-up section composed by Larry Clark to help you teach the march form and style to young students. There is the added benefit of a full recording of each march performed by a professional band on the CD that is included in the conductor's score. This is a valuable collection for any level band to use for marches at contest/festival performance or for sight-reading purposes.

The rigaudon is a French Baroque dance in a lively duple meter. Rhythmically simple with a few syncopated lines, this short composition is the perfect introduction to this style. With varying dynamics, this is an excellent piece for developing a lighter playing style while also focusing on listening, articulations, and musical phrasing with repeats. Playable by as few as one on a part, this also works well for smaller bands with limited instrumentation.
