Based on the poems by German poet Carl Hauptmann (late Romanticism) and the English poet William Wordsworth (early Romanticism). Carl Hauptmann was in poor health as a child, but highly intelligent. He studied philosophy, psychology and biology. In the latter he was admitted to the degree of doctor. His marriage provided financial independence, so that he could focus on his studies. Hauptmann wrote various novels, plays, poetry and scientific works. Night Twilight floats above the valley's night mists are hanging, there's a whispering brook. Now the covering veil is lifting quite: come and look! See the magicland before our gaze: tall as dreams the silver mountains stand, crossed by silent silver paths shining from a secret land. Noble, pure, the dreaming country sleeps. By the path the shadow black and hogh of a beach. a wisp of a white smoke creeps to the dark'ning sky. Where the valley is the darkest hued countless little lights shine silently. O my soul! Drink of solitude! Carl Hauptmann Wordsworth 'introduced' a new type of poetry, based on the speech of the common man. This was his answer to the poetry of the classicism which was bound by rigid rules. His definition of poetry was: the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings from emotions recollected in tranquility. It provides an opportunity for young bands to perform this popular traditional classic Spanish march style. (Paso Doble literally means two-step.) This is the music of the bull fight, and of the civic celebrations in the Spanish community, and is one of the classic types of marches that bands and their audiences have enjoyed for many generations. While this work is in the style of the great professional bands of Spain, it is readily playable by young bands.

Asteroid - Otto M. Schwarz
Asteroids and comets have played an important role throughout the history of life on earth. It is quite probable that the dinosaurs have been exterminated by an asteroid's impact in the Gulf of Mexico. Huge tidal waves and fire storms wiped out all life. This is the year 2067 according to the Christian calendar. A collision has just taken place in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and caused an asteroid to enter the earth's power of gravitation. It is instoppably approaching the blue planet. As its peoples have been fighting each other continuously, they missed the building of a global defence system against dangers coming from space. A scanner records the asteroid andimmediately sends a message to the President of the Anglo-American Union. The probability that the asteroid will hit the earth is judged 50% by the experts. Plans are made to shoot the celestial body with rockets live with hydrogen bombs or laser guns in order to throw it off its track, but they fail. The asteroid's size seems to threaten the existence of mankind. Those in the know stare at the night sky in bewilderment. But for the time being, there is still peace on earth....

The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the 'Tiroler Landeshymne' (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its 'couleur locale': for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

This is an original piece of music composed by ystein Olsen Vadsten, inspired by old Norwegian folk dances. "Jumpety Jump" actually started out as a "reinlender" (Norwegian Folk Dance) which origins from Rhinland. The reinlender is well disguised in this arrangement by adding the shuffle- and swing style to it. The piece is first of all meant as a "happy go lucky" tune, but is full of rhythmical and technical challenges. Its put up as a jazz-tune, first presenting the melody, then "improvisasations" by the different instrument groups, before going back to the first theme. The title "Jumpety Jump" refers to the kind of jumping feeling the shuffle groove gives.
