Who are they? For what have they come? However, once they bring out the drum, the triangle, and the cymbals, it is apparent that they are here to celebrate. There is even an extra step in their dance, for good measure!

The Greek word 'hypernikon' roughly translates as 'More Than Conquerors', the motto of Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts the commissioner of this piece. The work is inspired by David Rox's very own name the first two letters of his name, D and A, sets the first theme is in D major, with these notes being the tonic and dominant of the scale. After the stately intrada, the tempo accelerates and the festive feel of the march emerges. The trio melody serves as a beautiful contrast before finally ending with the opening theme in a grand tutti.

This work was inspired by the 3rd/4th century legend of Margaret of Antioch. Margaret was very devout, and lived as a shepherdess in the countryside. When the city prefect Olybrius proposed to her, on the condition that she would give up her faith, she refused and was eventually put to death. To evoke the archaic early-medieval atmosphere, Bert Appermont has used two Gregorian Kyries. In addition, influences from old music (such as old modes and parallel fifths) and Carl Orff's work are present. This four movement piece is an epic symphonic poem-like work with an incredible expressiveness and is ideal for a thematic concert or a contest.

The railway between Oslo and Bergen, "Bergensbanen", was built in the years 1895 1909. This piece is dedicated to the railway labourers, the navvies, who did the hard work across the mountains. Most of the work, even in the tunnels, were done by hand. The official opening of the railway was in 1909, but there was also a celebration and a dynamite salute when the two teams of labourers and locomotives from East and West met in the mountains in October 1907. At this point, the rails were joined together with a joint in the national colours: "The Junction Point"!

Someone, whether Santa himself or the elves in his employ, has to keep them fed, warm, and happy if they are to do the impossible again in a year's time. Old St. Nicholas Had a Farm has some fun with this idea by mashing up the classic song Old MacDonald with popular Christmas Carols. Using only the first six notes of the Bb scale and only two repeated eighth notes as the most challenging rhythm, students will feel comfortable playing the sound of sleigh bells, the crack of Santa's whip, and the thunder of reindeer hoofs. This piece will make a perfect addition to your next holiday concert and audienceswill delight in participating.

Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is based on the tune Suiryo-Bushi, which comes from the shamisen tradition and opens with two contrasting statements of the melody followed by several variations each in an own style based uponthe same tune, or sometimes only fragments of it. In one of the variants, the pentatonic scale is used. The final section is in the form of a scherzo, which eventually forms the accompaniment to a final presentation of the folk tune.

The melody known as "A Ya Zain" (also "Aya Zein" or "Ayazein,") is most often credited as an Egyptian folk song. The tune is easily recognizable as having Arabic origins by its use of the double harmonic minor scale (containing two augmented 2nd intervals). This arrangement gives us a good opportunity to expose young players to non-western tonalities. The use of short melodic sequences and repetition in the melody make it especially appropriate for young instrumentalists
