Eternal Vigilance (The Long Brave Line) - Robert Jager

The result of a collaborative commission by the U.S. Air Force Academy Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the U.S. Military Academy Band and the U.S. Naval Academy Band, this major work for band takes its title from a quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson, Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, and a variation of the West Point motto, The Long Gray Line. Opening with a tribute to those who have gone before in service to our country, a solemn, noble theme is presented that reappears near the end of the composition. The main body of the work is a series of march-like themes and idiomatic fragments culminating in a glorious full-band fanfare. Following a restatement of the noble theme, a stirring coda brings the music to a climactic close. Dur: 8:30 (Grade 5) (E.B. Marks)

Fantasy On A Russian air - Johnnie Vinson

Based on a familiar folk tune, Johnnie Vinson has created an appealling set of variations with an occasional nod to Beethoven, who used the same melody in his Theme and Variations for flute and piano (Op. 107, No. 7). With each variation featuring a different section of the band, this work utilizes a mixture of contrasting meters and styles. Dur: 4:00

Variants on an Irish folk tune - Timothy Johnson

The Irish folk tune Slane (the melody used in the hymn Be Thou My Vision) forms the foundation for this melodically expansive and inspired work for concert band. A flowing exploration of the melody in variation inspires thelistener with its bold and thrilling progression. The piece remains within reach of a solid grade 3 band but gives the impression of a higher level of composition. A rich variety of style and orchestration make this a goodchoice for festival use as well as concert performance, as well as a great opportunity to study the rich cultural heritage of Ireland. Deck the Halls

The original Welsh song Nos galan dating back to the sixteenth century, has become an international Christmas carol with the English lyric Deck the hall with boughs of holly. The song does not offer much in terms of variation, but I have tried to construct a short piece where one can see that the song still offers itself to a wide array of stylistical treatments. The opening is almost like a Christmas Overture, before it wanders in to a renaissance-like style. The middle section offers a much more lush and lyrical rubato treatment, with lots of color and thick harmonization. The end then turns the tempo even more up than at the start of the piece, and brings us through a big band ending with long soaring lines.- John Philip Hannevik -

    Enjoy - Marco Tamanini

"Enjoy", but also savour, relish: this is not descriptive music, but music to be appreciated. From three points of view: the rhythm of the first movement, the melody of the second and the swing of the third. This piece is characterised by a continuous variation of timbres and colours, in a quest for instrumental solutions that are constantly changing. Examples of this are the main theme in the first movement, which provides the rhythmic backing for the introduction of the third movement, or the sinuous melody of the Bolero, which unravels in a constant development of sounds and timbres.

    Incandescent Sky - Robert Sheldon

This sparkling concert overture commemorates the 30th anniversary of the First Coast Wind Symphony. An opening majestic fanfare leads to a buoyant main theme in 12/8 time. A lyrical contrasting section is as rich in melodic content as it is passion. The piece, being in a modified rondo form restates a variation of the main theme before returning to the opening fanfare and a rousing conclusion.

Rockin' Through the Snow - James L. Pierpont

Composed for young musicians to perform at their very first concert, an old favorite, Jingle Bells, is presented with an upbeat and decidedly different twist. Its a fun variation that provides young players with limited skills a spirited performance of this well-known Christmas carol. Sure to be a popular programming selection for that very special first concert.
