At the time of recording, Vienna was occupied by the USSR, thus preventing the scored "gun shots" from being performed to avoid starting another war.

To Honor, Thank and Remember - Michael Story

The Iliad (from (Symphony No. 2)) - Robert W. Smith

Calls to war are the prelude to this first movement of Robert W. Smith's for band, based on the classic story of 'The Odyssey'. You'll experience the squeaky wheels of the Trojan horse, the forest burning, and the sword fight amidst the distinguished regal melodies and energetic rhythms that drive to a conclusion. The ocean's presence is evident in the optional transition to the second movement, "The Winds of Poseidon" (BD9923). Much awaited, this work is monumental in nature. (7:44)

    Cahokia - Jared Spears

Tribal sounds are unmistakable in representing this ancient Indian nation. The Cahokia were the prehistoric Indian civilization which built the impressive mounds in Illinois that still exist today. The music represents the images of war, peace, celebration, and mystery which the composer encountered as he wandered in the footsteps of the ancient ones. Images of this long-departed culture reappear in this highly descriptive music for young band.

Ballad for Peace - Frank Erickson

The word "peace has many connotations: "a state of tranquility or quiet, freedom from war and harmony among neighbors", and more personally, "freedom from disquieting thoughts and emotions". This piece was written in an attempt to express ideas such as these. The form is similar to the composer's earlier Balladair (AABCAA) with a modulation leading to a final extended statement of the opening melody, serving as a codetta.

The Red Baron - Erik Morales

Based on a famous World War I German fighter pilot, this work feeds off of the raw emotion of open-air cockpit combat. A haunting opening effectively uses voices to portray a great red triplane emerging from a misty cloudbank in preparation for battle. As the pace of music intensifies, the plane is ambushed from behind and roaring trombone glissandos help paint a picture of aviation chaos as the planes dive through the air. Absolutely thrilling!
