This segues into the next theme, which features George Roots's stirring "Battle Cry of Freedom." Flutes and drums are widely used to convey a strong feeling of patriotism. NICCOLO PICCINI (1728 - 1800), an Italian operatic composer, was born in Bari, but in Naples asserted his talent for music at an early age, entering the Conservatory at the age of 14. His opera buffa La Buona Figiuloa (The Good Daughter), which appeared in 1779, began a war between his followers and the Gluckists, who favored the reformed method of opera. Piccini was a prolific composer; in addition to opera, he wrote songs and much sacred music, including masses. His works are charming and melodious and show him to be a man of great genius. This transcription for band of the overture from The Good Daughter has been completed by Eric Osterling.
