Dancin' into the '20s (A Ragtime Dance Music Revue)

The music included in has been chosen to reflect some of the styles of music and corresponding use for exhibition and social dancing during the years leading into the 1920s. Each of the works has been orchestrated for wind band from extant published orchestra music of the period. The outside one-two step movements are energetic and perhaps more brusque in nature than and the from Victor Herbert's operetta scores. Each work may be programmed individually, and hopefully, the compilation will serve as a special example of music from a by gone era in American musical and theatrical history.

Dancing Lights - Randall D. Standridge

This new work for young band draws inspiration from a park in the Great Lakes Region where an annual display of "dancing lights" brightens the winter skies. Active percussion, staccato rhythms, and careful scoring ensure that this work is a fun, yet achievable piece that would be appropriate for winter celebrations or any concert throughout the year.

Danny the Brave Heart - John O'Reilly

This arrangement of two Irish folk songs is dedicated to the memory of Danny Pearl, the Wall Street journalist who was kidnapped and subsequently murdered by Islamic Militants in February 2002. The choice of is an obvious one. The arranger, John O'Reilly, always thinks of Danny when he hears this tune since Mr. O'Reilly's daughter was very close to Danny during their high school years. Danny was a violinist and he loved to play fiddle music. is in the style Danny enjoyed and the lyrics of the song relate to the struggle of the Irish people as they defied the British oppression. Danse Antiqua - Chris Sharp

Inspired by the music of Frank Erickson, Chris Sharp offers this overture with a renaissance quality to it. The melody moves effectively between the different choirs as the piece develops. In addition, Chris provides some contrasts in style throughout. Very easy to put together, and ideal for concert or festival.

Originally written for piano, this work translates well for young bands. Written in 3/4, but intended to be performed in a bouncy "one," its light texture, melodic contour, and playful nature will be an outstanding addition to any contest or festival program. (3:00)

Danse Macabre - Camille Saint-Saëns / arr. Michael Story

This work was originally scored as a tone poem that was written in 1874 by well-known French composer Camille Saint-Sans. The basis of the piece is an old French superstition where at the stroke of midnight on Halloween, Death appears and summons the dead to dance while he plays his music for them. In a familiar 3/4, it's spooky enough for a Halloween performance and classical enough for any program or contest all year long! (3:15)
