Day Dreams - Dana Wilson

This work was commissioned in honor of the 75th birthday of the wonderful conductor Frank Battisti. It is based entirely on the musical pitches extracted from his name (FFrAAnk BABAttisti), forming the musical motive F A B A. In order to recognize the arc of his life and career, Day Dreams traces a metaphorical day. The movement titles all come from Thoreau's ---a place very close to where Frank spent a good part of his life. The work begins with a dramatic sunrise. The second movement represents morning (or youth), and juxtaposes two extremely contrasting and seemingly irreconcilable types of material, typical of that stage of life. The third movement explores the afternoon (adulthood), a period of sophisticated balancing of life's many forces. The final movement is a sunset, with each individual player saying goodbye.

Daydreaming - Gary Fagan

"Daydreaming" is a short, lighthearted tone poem with a very simple lyrical quality reflecting a behavior most of us exhibit from time to time. The melodic theme occurred to the composer as he was sitting in his studio looking out the window and doing what the title suggests he was doing. Da de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico honoring deceased family members and friends. It is not a time of sadness, but a time of remembrance and celebration. Two folk songs that have been associated with Da de los Muertos, "El Pajarito Verde"(The Green Bird) and "El Zopilote" (The Buzzard), are the inspiration for the arrangement of this celebratory work. is a traditional Mexican folk tune often performed by the famous Mariachi bands. This simple and elegant waltz has been arranged as an alto sax duet feature. The horns and low brass add harmony to the duet and the trumpets play their traditional roll in a Mariachi band, which is to add color and fill gaps in the melody.

Arranged by Douglas E. Wagner, three well-known secular carol tunes are showcased in this big and brassy, bright and flashy seasonal extravaganza, especially suited as a concert opener. Beginning with a cascade of chimes, soaring woodwind runs, and bold brass lines, "Deck the Hall" and "Here We Come A-Caroling" are presented with dynamic flair, interspersed with brief fanfare-like episodes. The mood transitions to a jaunting sleigh ride across the winter landscape, partnering the second time through with "Jingle Bells," as the spirited celebration closes with a short coda, drawn from musical materials heard in the opening measures of the work.
