Journey of the Spanish Buccaneers

From the call of the open seas to the wistful dance section, Journey of the Spanish Buccaneers will open the imagination of young band students and audiences. This piece opens with a short ostinato that develops into a tone cluster. This is followed by ominous sounds from the brass and percussion, representing the slow lumbering ship on the dangerous, open waters. A lyrical second section is followed by a dramatic return to the opening theme. This contest and festival style piece adds excitement to any concert program.

Journey to Illyria

Illyria is a region in southern Europe, and the name has been used in books and music throughout history, including Shakespearean plays. Composer Sean O'Loughlin takes beginning students on a musical journey, starting with broad melodic statements by the brass, bold full ensemble statements, a contrasting lyrical section, and concluding with a relentless finish. Journey to Illyriaisa sophisticated musical presentation that is still playable by the youngest of students.

Larry's pieces are some of the most performed at this grade level and this piece proves why with its bold rhythms, powerful harmonies and singable melodies. Joyful World

From the opening fanfare, this piece will put you in the holiday spirit! Joyful World is an adaptation of the familiar Christmas carol Joy to the World. The piece opens with fragments of the familiar carol cleverly woven into a spirited fanfare. This is followed by a rendition featuring a regimental snare part with playful harmonies. In the third section, the meter changes to create a beautiful 6/4 ballad, leading to a hint of the familiar Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee tune before returning to the original melody. The piece ends with a spirited brass flourish.

Jubilant Festival - Bill Calhoun

Jubilant Festival is a joyous piece that begins with a fanfare-like gesture and then leads to an uplifting melody in the woodwinds. This is followed by excellent counter-melodies n the middle voices and well-scored lyrical lines. A showcase piece for the young band that can be used at contest or festival performance, Jubilant Festival will impress the judges for sure!

Jubilant Holiday

Following up on the success of his arrangement of Carol of the Bells, O'Loughlin provides advancing bands with a truly symphonic piece that includes variations on the famous In Dulci Jubilo. You will note that Sean quotes passages from the Nutcracker and hints of other holiday favorites.
