Based on the traditional American shaped-note melody The Promised Land (first published in the 1800's), Beyond the Stars captures the spirit of the early American church musicians who voiced their enthusiasm for life and the freedom of worship through both vocal and instrumental music. The music features several mini-variations wrapped up in four large variations (Fast, Fast, Slow, Fast-recapitulation). The composer has created new thematic material for each variation by excerpting motifs from three separate phrases of the original shaped-note melody. With first and second year players in mind, Ed Huckeby has developed a modal melodic and harmonic structure using a familiar key as the tonal centre, making the piece sound much more difficult than it really is. The contrasting slow section allows the ensemble to showcase its developing legato style. A single bass line also allows great flexibility for ensembles with limited low brass and low woodwind sections. This movement is finalized with a long, slow build to the climax, again using the motif that is present throughout the entire suite. It is to be performed with a great sense of wonder and excitement, with a gradual build to the end. A grand conclusion to this dynamic suite. Bi-Millennial Celebration' has been composed to honour the 2000th anniversary of the founding of the city of Nijmegen. This work consists of three continuous movements. The first movement depicts the arrival of the Romans and the founding of Nijmegen. The second movement portrays the rustic and idyllic countryside surrounding the city. A musical celebration from these areas to the city of Nijmegen comes to life in the third movement.
