The march Defenders Day is named for the legal holiday in Maryland which commemorates the successful defense of the city of Baltimore on September 12, 1814 from an invading British force during the War of 1812. This event would lead to the writing of the United States of America's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." This moving piece embodies all the simplicity of Russian Orthodox music, yet displays the sweeping beauty of Rachmaninov's lyricism. Conductors will appreciate the opportunity to teach extended phrases and legato style. Vespers is the sunset evening prayer of the Orthodox Church, and during the canonical hours of an all-night vigil, the Ave Maria would be sung at midnight, hence the 12 chime notes at the apex of the piece. Both arrangements are novel settings in which a beginning band can perform the standard folk songs found in the first few pages of most band methods.
