Commissioned by the distinguished Northshore Concert Band under the direction of Mallory Thompson, Let the Amen Sound is based on Joachim Neander's 17th-century chorale "Lobe den Herren," known in English as "Praise to the Lord." The hymn tune is stated first by a solo flute, accompanied by percussion and muted trumpets, evoking the sound of liturgical bells. Three variations follow that represent important milestones common to human existence - the playful exuberance of childhood, the sentimental dance of youth, and the triumphant celebration of lives well lived. Score available separately.Following on the success of Arturo Marquez's Danzon No.2 adapted for band, Oliver Nickel's transcription of Conga del Fuego Nuevo (Conga of New Fire) gives an added kick to the concert band repertoire. In contrast to the elegant, sinuous Danzon, Conga is an up-tempo, celebratory piece, bright and catchy, with the percussion section providing the signature kick at the end of the conga pattern. Marquez slows things down in the middle section to spotlight the 1st trumpet in a melody that recalls the mariachi tradition. The alto saxes pick it up and relax into a ritard, only to be interrupted by the return of the opening material. The piece ends in fiery fashion.Duration: 5:00

This Wind Band arrangement is taken from a setting for orchestra by the composer.

This arrangement is compatible with the published vocal score available seperately. This is another of John Rutter's gorgeous melodies and a deeply moving piece. When performed with Chorus, the words will certainly make a profound statement.
