The Cherry Tree (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Beck, Brian

The Cherry Tree is a beautiful and lyrical folk song dating back as early as the 15th century in the English Midlands. Having traveled all around western Europe, this folk tune eventually found its way to America, gaining popularity in the South in early 1900s and again in the 1960s. This setting, by composer Brian Beck, captures the beauty and simplicity of the original ballad while encouraging musical expression and smooth phrasing. Duration: 3.30

A Moorside March (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - Brand, Michael

Holst composed A Moorside Suite for Brass Band in 1928. It is in three movements, this March being preceded by a Scherzo and Nocturne. It is an extraordinary mature work for band from a master composer. There is very little fortissimo writing and there are no semiquavers at all. Instead, Holst has written clean melodic lines with each part being woven into a texture based on the modal lines of English folk music; but these represent its stylistic origin rather than using actual folk tunes as in Holst's earlier band writing. The March is stirring and flowing and is an ideal standalone piece to open or close any concert or festival programme. Duration: 4.15

Romance (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

This simple little romance was written in the style of a Catalan folk song. It is entirely original but was undoubtedly influenced by the arrangements of Catalan folk songs for guitar by Miguel Llobet (1878-1938). Typical of the style, the tune is in 6/8 with a gentle lilt and has just one rather refined outburst of passion before retreating back into its shell. Duration: 3.30

Nedslatt, Sorgemarsj (Dead End, Funeral March) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Olsen Vadsten, Oystein

An addition to the composer's series of folk music inspired pieces, has the slightly condescending title "Dead End". The piece is a funeral march and so also written for an occasion, where this style of music was a natural inspiration. It is built on a drum ostinato, which is followed by a melody in Norwegian folk music style. The repetitions in the melody line and rhythm, create a hypnotic effect, leaving us in a special state of mind, alternating between deep sorrow, bottomless despair and grateful gratitude. The piece has proven to be effective, both as a concert opener and as the last piece in a concert. Duration: 6.10

Japanese War March (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Rath, Eric

Based on the folk song, Kokirko Bushi. Kokiriko Bushi is long believed to be the oldest folk song in Japan. The Lark in the Morning (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

A vibrant folk dance set for full band. This is one of several folk tunes associated with this title. It's a jig in a minor key with suitable drumming which plays with and across (in hemiola style) the 6/8 rhythm. The setting is dramatic and intense while maintaining the feel of the jig. The outer sections are balanced by a quieter section which momentarily takes the heat out of the music before the dance takes over again and builds to a conclusion.Duration: 3.15

As I Walked Through the Meadow (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - La Plante, Pierre

Pastorale on a Traditional English Folksong. Pierre La Plante is well-known for his mastery at creating concert band settings of folk tunes with Grainger-esque style. "As I Walked Through The Meadow" is a pastorale setting of a traditional English folk tune that, with careful attention to intonation and expressive playing, will give your ensemble's musicianship a chance to shine. The middle section is a variation on the main theme which returns, builds to a climax and ends quietly in a somewhat wistful manner. A beautiful choice for concert or contest change of pace. Outstanding music for wind band! Duration: 4.30
