An exultant 18th century hymn-tune provides the melodic inspiration for Joyance. Written in ternary form, the work opens with a hymn-based maestoso introduction in Eb Major. Following the Allegro A section (also based melodically on the hymn), the mood becomes plaintive as the B Section is presented featuring a relative minor version of hymn motives. Following a return of the Eb Major A section, the work concludes with a coda, during which a victorious exclamation of the complete Darwall composition is heard.

Most of the ensuing music is based on this theme in one variant or another. whilst basically a set of variations, occasionally a motif will assume more importance in the following section, the main theme never being too far away. This music goes through many mood swings but finally the opening idea reveals itself agian and fades away on piccolo and glockenspiel. Johannes Brahms was not a religious man in the usual sense of the term, so it should be of no surprise that when he wrote the "German Requiem," it did not follow the prescribed five movement form of the traditional requiem mass, but instead contained seven movements. The first time Brahms combined orchestra with chorus and soloists, it is considered to be his choral masterwork. While the style is unabashedly romantic with all the depth and beauty associated with the music of Brahms, the form is clearly influenced by Handel and reflects Brahms' intensive study of earlier masters. "Blessed Are They" is the sublime first movement of the "German Requeim," and the original version pairs the chorus with the orchestra to create a heavy, somber mood. This skillfully crafted arrangement for concert band has become a staple in literature for developing bands.

A Bluegrass Overture was commissioned by Gabriel Wooley and funded by a grant from Leslie and Cathy Anderson for the Central Kentucky Concert Band to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2016.This energetic overture opens with an introduction loosely based on 'bluegrass' chords before a slower, legato chorale appears in the clarinets and flutes. This is short-lived and soon a new mood is introduced, based on a repeated-note accompaniment. This leads to the main theme, heavily syncopated with bluesy inflections.A central section features a cantabile melody, which changes key frequently, before the main theme reappears, leading toa triumphal presentation of the earlier chorale melody.
